Gday guys,

I have been reading through some of your topics and have decided to have my first crack in the Sup forum. The reason is that Im starting to wonder "what am I missing"? These are genuine questions so please bare with me and forgive my lack of knowledge and kookness
You all seem very enthusiastic about your sport which has got me wondering what has SUP to offer?

So , exactly what is it about SUP that keeps you up at night, that has you wake up before the alarm, that has you stay out on the water long after your suncrean has run out- What is it that fuels this passion????

Has anyone got any really cool links on you tube that I can check out to get a taste of this.

Please share with me your experience of SUP and why it is the sport for you!!!

Best reguards ,

Kearnsy

I looked into SUP about 2 and half years ago. I was getting frustrated with surfing due to a bad back, which I'd already had major surgery on. I've been a die hard short boarder for 25 years, unfortunately surfing isn't great for your back. The arch in your back from paddling and transition from laying to getting to your feet places immense strain on the back. Unlike SUP it's totally reversed, Your already on your feet the paddling works the inner core muscles to strengthen the back.

SUP IMO really make those days when you would normally give yourself a hernia on a shortboard enjoyable. I still love getting out on the performance mal when my backs feeling good, but SUP is just as enjoyable.

I would give anything to be able to get on a shortboard and pull into barrels in Indo, but realistically I'm physically restricted these days. Never now, maybe one day I'll post a pic of me pulling into a barrel on a SUP, I'll be more stoked than when it happens than any I've had on a shortboard.

Hey Kearnsey,

I'm a born and bred 'surfer' and new to SUP's too.

Mate, it's just bloody fun, opens up a whole new world, no more 'non surfing' days and if you wanna rip it up (or try) you get yourself a performance SUP and find a spot on the coast peeling off with few out back while the hoards sit on the known breaks fighting over the waves and when it's onshore or flat, pull out your still water machine and hone your paddle technique, work up some fitness and explore area's you'd never in your wildest dreams new existed.

I'm totally hooked and with 3 mals still on my racks (sold 5 to pay for my 3 SUP's), I considering offloading all 3 to purchase another 1 or 2 SUP's cause I'm just totally loving it and can never even see me wanting to prone surf again !

Hi Kearnsey , great Avater pic mate Its all about trying to get one of these big suckers barrelled. Been luck enough once or twice in waves you would be proud to get shacked on a 6 6" .
Just start on an easy board and work your way down to smaller more high performance sub .

Allright- Thanks guys Im getting the picture and I like it. Im thinking of getting the Mrs one (that I can use). She is'nt really too keen on getting smashed on her mal and Im thinking that this could maximise her watertime a little(and another toy for me). I notice that there is somewhere on Pelican point in Perth where we can take a few for a test run- Im onto it

I just got the wife an 11'2 for christmas so that she can get out on the coast here in Perth and cruise along. The ulterior motive in getting the board is that I was looking at something a bit bigger than my 10' to start doing down winders on and I found that this was the perfect balance. The other option I was looking at was the Naish 12' Glide but figured it might be a bit big for the wife to carry around. Also check out www.elementalsup.com.au/ as they offer fitness classes for women specifically.

Hey Kearnsy - you asked about why everyone is going on about SUP and my reply is go out and do it a few times. My v first time on a board was via a SUP school and so far have had about 6 lessons and 4-5 sessions by myself with a hire board practising on v small waves inside a river mouth on incoming tide. Only about 12 sessions total.

I believe I'm getting the right advice and taking things steady - not ready for solo beach breaks just yet (had my first lesson today on beach breaks in 1-2ft waves and had a blast).

I've had NO previous board surfing experience before and see SUP simply as a challenge to progress from novice to being capable in surf.

Good luck! Let us all know how you are going...
