Hey guys..

Just a warning to anybody that gets a great new board and chucks it on their roof with
soft racks... DON'T DO IT!

The side of my board has split.. not a biggie but it has also compressed the sides..
Not cool....

time for new wheels!!

Oh no!. Not the new 9'5" Mana..

Your trip to the beach from home on the Geelong Freeway wouldn't help..

I think if you're going to use soft racks you need to keep your speed down.

Also the soft racks may work much better if you can spread them more apart on the roof.

Yes agree! It probably doesn't help to be a speed freak either..
Just got 2 speeding tickets from that freeway.. always too keen to get to the water!!!

Perhaps the racks were pulled too tight too.. although the board was flapping..

I cannot recommend the FCS soft racks enough. Everything from the width of the straps to the D shackles just like they use to hold helmets on your head. Not to mention the padding on the underside to protect your roof. Two different straps, one to hold it to the car, the other to hold your boards.

They are the most expensive in any surf shop but there really is no substitute especially for big boards and lots of air pressure.

Agree with CMC, we have used the FCS soft racks on all sorts of cars big and small and boards up to 12'6 with no issues at all. The best way is if possible get the straps as far back and forward over the pillars as possible so you dont dent the roof and if in doubt tie the boards front and rear to the bumpers to stabilze them.

We carried all of our boards to the the Port Phillip Cup using FCS soft racks again with no issues.

Phill.

REally? I'm sure they're FCS soft racks, with padding and all. The board flapped and I heard it buckling.. AND what's more the SUP board split down the sides?!?! I wasn't going that fast!!

Problem solved though.. the Kombi will only go a maximum speed of ..um 110km/hr But it has slowed me down somewhat!?!?!

Perhaps the straps were just too tight?!

I've carried boards with Balin Soft Racks for hundreds of km at speeds of 100km without those issues.

The last time I did it was January and I had it wired. I think you need a four door car and you need to take care of how you secure everything.

The first time I did it I had noise issues but got them sorted this time around with a bit of extra tinkering. Not sure that I'd try it on a two door car though.

Hi guys,
I also use soft racks on a 2 door car, I sit the board a fair way back , the 10' Mana travels ok. If I go on a long run 400ks I tie a rope from the front of the board to the F/ bumper. Travels ok at 110kms errr +. Just a few dents in the roof but its not a dream car!

Just don't ever use ratchets unless you want custom made crease lines in your board like I have Ouch!
