My 6 year old daughter and 3 year old son and I went down to the beach to my little reef break this arvo. Some of you will know where Im talking about ssshhh hehehe.
Swell was non existant... except here. A knee high wave broke over the ledge in a foot of water and peeled left. I checked it this morning but the tide was too low. This arvo with the higher tide and offshore winds was bound to be a goer. My daughter stayed on the beach and played with the other kids while my son sat on the nose of my Starboard 11'2 and we paddled out to catch a few waves.
HE LOVED IT! I wish I got some photos. All I got was a photo from my phone. He would lay on his stomach with both his hands over the nose of the board. I would paddle onto the wave while he laughed and shouted "paddle harder dad!"
Then he would go "weeeeee!"
He asked for wave after wave and as he got more confident he asked if he could paddle to catch a BIG wave. The paddle was a bit heavy but at least he gave it a go.
I tried getting my daughter onto it but she is a little more unsure about it and was happy to just swim in the water.
It was a classic father/son moment that I will never forget.

Sounds great Greanroom.. ... Next time take a camera.

Looks like you need to make a cheap light weight paddle for him..

Good stuff Greenroom.

Last weekend Mum and baby brother were in the big smoke so I thought I would take my two year old for a paddle in the shallows on the bay. Got both our boardies and rashies on, stinking hot day so both got lathered up in sunscreen and our big hats on, put his little floatation vest on, got the board out of the cover carried the board, my paddle and his paddle down to the edge of the water, and that was as far as we got.... he just wanted to build sand castles......so back to the car pack everything up again and get the bucket and spade out.

Did similar over Christmas with 7 year old nephew and 5 year old daughter. Both had turns whilst catching very small waves at Eagle Bay (near Dunsborough).

Nephew couldn't take the smile away from his face when a got him to stand up on the waves we were paddling onto. My daughter was a bit more cautious to start off, but then got her standing up as well.
