Heading out to South California for a SUP trip in October, spending roughly 7 days in Santa Monica and 7 days in San Diego but wanted to book accommodation near the best SUP beaches.

Any info greatly appreciated

I was in Santa Monica in June. Miles of beach either side of the pier so I would stay in town and enjoy the food!

Have a great trip

This was a few years ago, but we stayed at the Hotel California (yes, really) in Santa Monica. It's a small, not too flash, but cool, hotel a block from the beach. Wasn't on a surf trip when I was there, so don't have the low down on best spots, but found it a convenient location. It's worth hiring a pushbike and riding down the beach path to Venice on a Sunday when they have a market - all the hippies and trippers come out then. Apologise in advance for the holiday snaps, but this will give you an idea (sorry, couldn't make them smaller).

Sorry Phil I have family there so didn't check hotels.

Not sure about sup hire but heaps of massive surf shops so you should be OK

Great photos Rosscoe it's a full on circus - you are going to love it Phil

Southern California in October there is only 1 place to be............ BOP!

This year moving to Salt Creek should provide plenty of entertainment, just wish I was going this year.

October is good for accommodations as it's out of the vacation periods. If the beach hotels in SM
are too pricey try airbnb. The poseidonstandup.com/ shop is right by the pier with a good
rental selection. Though you could walk to the waves from there, moving off towards Malibu
or south towards Palos Verdes would yield nicer surf, especially if there's any size.

If it's flat, tarsanstandup.com/ in hermosa beach rents race and touring boards within walking
distance of the beach.

Enjoy

The best part about Hotel California is the casual hours at reception - you can check out any time you like. But seriously, last time I was in Santa Monica, that place was looking pretty tired. If money was no object, you would stay at Casa del Mar or Shutters On The Beach. I've stayed at the Viceroy the couple times I've been there. It's a block back from the beach but still pretty damn good.

I live in northern San Diego. Your coming to town at the best time, still in trunks, nice south swells still coming in, and we start to get those nice north west swells, needless to say its the best time to be here. That being said, the two most popular spots to sup are Cardiff, its located in Encinitas Ca. Their are plenty of cheap and funky places to stay real close to the water, if your feeling kinda like trying something a little different they have a very famous camp ground right at the best spot to sup, wake up and surf, plus its nice and cool so you won't burn up. The second place is Sunset cliffs, located in Point Loma, very close to downtown San Diego. This place is probably a better wave, and the crowd here is a little more hostile, I've heard that Sup's are currently taking over this spot, not sure if that's a good thing or not?? Anyways with it being so close to the actual city of San Diego their is plenty of spots to stay for 60-100 a night.
