Hello friends,
yesterday I tried for the first time some Racing paddling.
In total absence of wind and current I was able to make 750 meters in 7 minutes and 30 seconds. That is a speed of 6 km an hour or 3,3 knots per hour.
Any good?
Bye Jankie

I think the good paddlers are either side of 6 minutes for 1000mtrs Jankie,so there's something to work towards, but then again if I lived amongst some of the best waves in the world as you do I wouldn't be to concerned about flat water sup speed

...and they're doing those times on long, narrow, pointy race boards...what board did you to do your 750m on Jankie?

Hey Jankie,

Keep paddling! Fast, fit guys can average 10km hr for 10km and can do short bursts to around 13km/h. Average cruising speed should be around 8.5-9 km/h.

Depends a bit on the race board, but mostly the engine paddling it

Hi Jankie, good to hear the speed bug has bit!

On a 14' in perfect flat still conditions you should aim to average over 9km/h best guys may hit 10km/h for extended periods of time.

in our 200m sprints the guys can average 11km/h - Jim Terrel I think hit 13km/h over 200 - so you got a little work to do

I think I should stick to waves!!! I almost fainted after 750m at that speed.
For sure board is nothing close to serious racing but 13 km an hour!!!! WTH...

Actually, training for flat water paddling can help you a lot in waves. Jut don't bother with the racing boards, just use your tippiest surf SUP and try to train until you are able to sustain a steady speed for an hour. You will find there is some "wall" at around 10mn where you feel exhausted and think you need some rest. Just train to be able to paddle for more than 10mn and should be able to paddle for hours... I can sustain 6.5km/h for an hour on a 9' now but before specific training I couldn't paddle more than 10mn without some rest.

Also it is a great way to enjoy flat water paddling with the familly. My daughters could enjoy a leisury pace on their 9' while I had an intense workout following them on my 6'8" :-) making 10km trips around the local islands a summer on my pointed-nose 7'10" helped me immensely.

Im around the 7.1 kms on my SUP for time trials. A lot will depend on age and general fitness. One of the lads is averaging 8.5km per hour and he is bloody moving its well beyond cruising speed. We are doing a 5km circuit and its hard work. Remember that going fast is about beating yourself each time and not getting bummed when someone else steals the fast out of the water. After a while you will know what I mean :)

Speed many variable we do a 4.25km trial
Times vary on a good day from 30 to 35 in a good day, on a windy day u can add 7 to 10 min
Throw in a 14' race board compared to say a narlu and there is 5 min. Many variables

I was going to suggest a page on Facebook maybe to log GPS runs. The sailboard guys have had a GPS challenge going for a few years. I think they run their own website, but a public page on FB would do the trick I reckon. Ideas???
