Just thought there may be some others out there who are impatient with injuries.
I damaged my ribs about 5 days ago. Thought it was a cracked rib syndrome as I have done this a few times windsurfing but in hindsight I am guessing they must have been bruised this time.Knew the docs would just say rest anyway.
Injury was caused as I was on my 9' naish in decent surf at the Alley.
I am still getting used to the size with 93kgs on it when I started to lose it just waiting.
As I was about to fall I noticed a largish dark swimming critter exactly where I was falling and elected to use the board as protection when falling.I have cursed myself since .. what if it was just a manta ray, which we see plenty of. Board turned on its side as I fell and stuffed my ribs. Thought I was not too bad until about 15 mins when the pain came on. I struggled in and eventually couldn't lie in the board without sharp pain from the rib cage.
Anyway went home and lay down. Could not get off the couch without assistance from the kids due to the pain. They thought it was very serious and loved the importance of their contribution. NEVER happened this badly before.
I love to windsurf and knew the wind was on its way this week .
I remembered a physio years ago mentioning that if you want to speed up injury repair you could turn on the hot tap in the shower for a while then cold and repeat.
I wanted this injury to hurry up so I tried a variation which has seemed to work wonders...
First 72 hours - Ibuprofen and rest.. No choice really there anyway.Couldn't even sleep on the damaged side and had to wake up to turn slightly due to pain.
Used a hot water bottle and ice pack for 30 mins in rotation with about 5 mins of each.
I did this over two days and have found a miraculous acceleration of healing.
I remembered the physio saying that the heat brings in the blood and cold evacuates it . It didn't happen on the spot but after 24 hours it was amazing and over 48 hours I couldn't believe it. I feel that I have saved about a week or two of recovery and had to share it. I am not a medical person so perhaps those more qualified could comment on the viability of this , but it seems to have sped things up incredibly.
Just went for a paddlesurf in poor conditions. Ribs still sore and can't really lie comfortably on the board but I thought 4 weeks out of the water from previous experience .Great to get back on the water.
I hope it helps someone else out there....

Awesome job with the recovery. Reducing the swelling / inflamation like you did worked wonders.

Oh, if you wore a power balance band you wouldn't have fallen off

Sorry, I'll give myself an uppercut before I start something again

I think part of me wishes I had done something medical but alas I am not in that game.. Just amazed when I find something that seems to work quickly.
Anyway , I was thrilled with the time it took and I hope it helps someone else..

Apply power band around affected toes. Hologram will fix them quickly and make them smarter.
Seriously though, I am sorry to hear about your injury. I have cracked a few toes over time with martial arts and windsurfing. I would see a doc to make sure they are in the right position when healing but I believe you have to leave them alone so they can knit. Never know you might get a nice beany out of it. Maybe the heat ice combo would help after the first week.
Try not to get to toey

From my previous triathlon days the hot and cold works very well for recovery after some really hard training sessions

Especially ice baths or a pool in winter then hot shower, repeat a few times

Hurts but works
