Back in the late 80's I went to the Hughes art gallery in Surrey Hills
for an opening of a collection of surfboards painted by Reg Mombassa
and the rest of the guys from Mental as Anything.
A mate of mine worked in production at Mambo and snuck me in on
the VIP list. The place was packed with famous muso's and media types.
I'm pretty sure I was the only person there that had ever actually used
a surfboard as god intended.
I tried my best to educate the poor inner city sophisticants about the
benefits of excessive rocker and nose lift at sucky reef breaks as
opposed to blah blah blah, and you know what! I don't think they
were all that interested.
I mean who wouldn't be interested in a half drunk scruffy little surfer/fireman
type espousing the latest theory on surfboard design at 2 in the morning at a
inner city art gallery.
Some people don't know how lucky they are!
