A little while ago there was a thread about Flat water speeds and someone mentioned the Jim Terrell won the 200m sprint at the Silver Blade Regatta in 1:02 (or there abouts). So I went and did some digging to try and find pictures or video of it and here are some great ones showing his technique.

Obviously with Jim's background he knows a thing or two and after watching a C1 paddler the other morning at training it looks like they have it dialed for short periods, don't know how you would go at sustaining it though.

Hey Cam,

Have a look at this url. I think it may have been me speaking to you about it the other day. This is the video. Scroll down about half way down the thread and you'll find Blueplanetsurf's post has the video embedded.

I tried his style and it is fast for short distance but heavily taxing for anything other than a short sprint.

Plunge Stroke. Here's the video/writeup:

I love the way they call it an 'eccentric' stroke technique. As a former C1 paddler I thought changing sides was a bit weird when I first started SUP.

Not sure why it would be considered as an unfair advantage - just a different technique - there is no difference in equipment.

I guess if you are down on one knee, the question will arise, is it stand up? On thing is for sure, not only can you increase your rating, it also keeps you down out of the wind

He's not on one knee, he's standing with pretty much both feet pointing forwards and apart.

I have never paddled C1 but it is an Olympic sport and huge in Europe. I'd imagine there is more to the paddle control to stay in a straight line when paddling on one side than you would think. Draw strokes, J strokes etc to stay straight... How do they do it Goatman??

But by being down on one knee or similar does then then lift the nose and allow air to catch underneath as you don't have as much weight pushing the nose down into the water?

To combat that you would just not put weight on the dropped knee, but are you then getting the most power out of a stroke?

Darren- Our discussion the other day was one of the things that triggered my interest.

I thought Jimi use to paddle a technique down on one knee? I can see they are not doing it there, but I thought it was a style from years past? Anyway, regarding the weight....body weight is body weight, it doesn't change just because you are down on one knee. You still sit the board in the water the same as if you were standing. It does open your hips up and allow you to drive more quick short power strokes. It is tricky going out the surf...but like I said we where stuffing around

Your right, body weight is body weight. the important part is where and how it is transferred to the board and ultimately the water. In the picture above he is almost in the position to do a kick turn, but as his weight is over the front foot the tail doesn't sink as much as if he was going to do a kick turn. Therefore is all or the majority of weight transferred through your front foot and your back leg there just for balance?

You can see in the picture Jim's board isn't as flat in the water as the others, given Jim's is a fairly standard board with no modifications to allow for his style, wouldn't this make it slower as the water would be hitting a flat surface and not being displaced by the nose?

Consider the volume of these boards and the water they displace. Yes he is in a different stance but he is still in the middle of the board. Not many boards/paddlers keep the board flat through the whole stroke, and most get some bounce going. A pic taken in one point of time is just that. Yes his board my not sit as others but his stroke makes up for it. Also remember he dominated this style for a long time and not many would better him. At the end if the day its not the board or the stroke technique but the person.....different things work for different people. Next time your out there try some different things and half some fun. My mate got a good laugh out of me doing the one knee thing when I tried to go through a breaking wave....

just had a chance to watch the vid Chris posted......As Jim says, and footage at 23 seconds....down on one knee is the fastest way to paddle the canoes. Watching the vid of the SUP sprint to me showed his rating was not as high as the others, but looked more powerful
