I'm inspired :-)

Makes me think with the recent Doctor, there would be nothing stopping individuals by choice,
raising awareness & standing up for teenage suicide prevention or whatever cause is chosen.
The Big Blue paddle is a great example of this.

The White Cloud Foundation is a new charity (established in 2011) to increase access to treatment and support for people, families and carers living with depression. I've posted previously on seabreeze about a Stand Up paddle event that we put on in Brisbane each year. It is a 3 day event paddling from Wivenhoe Dam to the Gateway Bridge (Day 1 - 43km through rapids, Day 2 - 39km flat water, Day 3 - 33km flat water through the city). Everyone that participates creates and Everyday Hero page to raise funds and all funds raised from this event go towards providing free treatment at a White Cloud centre from Allied health staff (psychologist, social worker, exercise physiologist and dietician) for people/families who recognise that they are in the early stages of a dark patch.

Last Saturday 25th January 2014 we conducted our first event in Tasmania for the same purpose, to raise awareness and funds for people/families living with depression to access free treatment from a Tasmanian White Cloud centre. The event started at 9am from Peppermint Bay, Woodbridge and finished at the Sandy Bay Rowing Club at 3pm - Total distance of 35km. Unfortunately we were unable to transport our SUPs from Brisbane and were unable to rent any so had to do the event in 2 man sea kayaks. The conditions were amazing for a downwinder with a stiff southerly breeze behind us the whole way. The bumps were amazing!! There is huge potential for some major down winding action in Tassie. We are running this event again next year on Feb 14 2015 with 2 starts: 9am at Woodbridge for the full 35km, then a second start at 1pm from Kingston Beach - 15km.

We are looking to conduct an event in Melbourne but haven't started looking at logistics as yet (the plan is to engage the local SUP community to get some momentum).

If you are interested in participating in any of these events please contact White Cloud Foundation or 'like' us on Facebook where we post alerts and invitations to all our paddling events.

Our patron & board member is Ben Roberts-Smith, we are still looking for a board and paddle big enough for him to use. He is a big UNIT!!!

You are onto something here. The pre-eminent American psychiatrist Martin Seligman argues that far too much attention in the fields of psychiatry and psychology are dedicated to the abnormal and to the sick - depression, anxiety, and the clinical mental illnesses such as schizophenia and bipolar disorders. He champions an alternate approach called Positive Psychology, where those who are feeling okay are encouraged to feel even better, and to aspire to true happiness. I think that's where the boobs come in.
