Rode one of these new babies at tiny scarbs yesterday - 30 inches wide (the magic number!) and a beautiful pulled in pin - which i reckon lets these things shine when the speed and power surf comes on.

compared to my much beloved 11'2 - prob 7.3% less stable - gives away a little but really not very much - i am 85 kgs and the board was hard to fall off!

A bit less glide for flat water paddling - still pretty good though - we had a glassy morning so it was really good for rating this aspect.

Step back turns - on my 11'2 i have go a step and a half back to whip a quick 180. On the 10'5 its more like half a step - if that

Balance - feels great - everything feels like it is right under your body in the centre of the board - the 11'2 required a little more walking for trim - which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Surf - i would like to add to this as i get this board into some larger and more pushy waves - but i did get some waist / thigh high runners - it was super easy and safe to put the 10'5 into a rail line floater- and easy to land them.

Surfing speed - this board feels FAST - which is pretty good because the 11'2 that i am used too already rockets along nicely. the board felt SUPER lively and plenty loose.

As a supper of 2 years now i have found my new all rounder - and will reluctantly and tearfully move on my Starboard 11'2 (which i would definitely keep if i could justify the bucks)

Nice, sounds like a good board, whats the rocker like compared to the 11 2" ?. Should have good waves here tomorrow, so will finally get to thrash out the new 8 6" surfshapes in some decent waves, fingers crossed

had a try on one of these several weeks ago.

as soon as i jumped on , i liked it a lot.

sml waves on the day but felt very fast. very nice tail,,

interested to hear how it goes on bigger waves,,

one of the only probs i had with the 11'2, was it felt a bit risky on bigger waves and i tended to nosedive on the steep drops. but maybe my rookie style?

just had about 4000 waves on this board in an hour.

Good old small scarbs - some nice little peerlers happening through the rips and gutters on the inside.

It was A bit larger than last time

- i am feeling alot of love for this board!!

It maintains alot of the things i love the 11'2 for - such as great paddle glide, longboard walk the board, trimability and small wave speed generation of the 11'2 but feels even easier to cross into performance surfing (reos , floaters over sections, hard carves and snaps)

- she's a definite keeper.

Is this the board in the catalogue called the Drive? What material was it made out of?

Hey Linter - your board should have come with the new 220 surf fin - I think they are about 8.5 inch and are black/grey/white in colour. Try running the board with the 220 as a single fin setup. Start with the fin just forward of centre in the box and i reckon you will love it. After coming off the single fin 11.2 I really found the side bites on the smaller board a pain in the butt and felt they created too much drag - especially when there is a bit of current running. With the single you don't lose anything other than a tiny bit of bite off the bottom in bigger surf but it is a much better behaved board.

the fin i got is black, with 'drake' in gray, a white scoop of color behind that; it's marked as a SUP 9" fin. anyway, it sounds like the one you've got, give or take. thanks for the tip re the side biters; i'll leave them off and see how that goes. the big fin looks like a nice one. thanks again!

Back to scarbs - Had a bit more of a serious session today - waves up to chest high - fast peeling lefts and rights with some beachy power (scarbs / brighton - mid to high tide -1.1 m swell)

didnt miss a reo or floater - backside or frontside - all day- not one! just get some speed - bottom turn - spot the section -pop her up onto the foam , unweight - put your arms out like a tv aerial for max balance - bend ze knees - and enjoy the weightless magic carpet foam ride down to the bottom of the wave! No catch , no grab - just speed for the next section!

maybe its the 11'2 training - or maybe this board just has magic dust sprinkled on it.

Even got a 40m long screamer right hander (all of chest high but insane form) - pumping the board like my little 6'4 - and she responds.

And on pocket reos - with sections coming at you -so easy to crank the board through a 180 degree turn - and charge back the other way through the reform-

This seriously feels like my little single concave surfboard - but with 10 times the waves in half the surf!! What a session

- This board is the ultimate all rounder - i cant fault it. Well it is very slightly harder to balance on than the 11'2 - but not by much!!

I'm off to the desert over easter to get some waves!

It wont be heaving (as it can be) but there Should be a nice waist to shoulder high swell come thursday , friday and saturday. And some nice glassy conditions too! I can definitely see some 300m glassy runners ripping down the contour lines of the reef.

Vio POV1 helmet cam with a nice wide angle lens will be put to work - will have a nice flick when i get back after easter - happy wave hunting everyone!!

Sounds great

Have been a bit neglectful and only had a paddle on mine so far, but hopefully catch some waves over Easter. Keep on going to the shed to make sure that it is still there and hasn't taken itself surfing.

After the SB 12', now time to try and get stuck in and catch some monsters over winter. Not that the 12' was any slouch bigger waves IMHO.

I bought the SB 10'5" a few weeks ago but only really got to ride clean waves on it for the first time on Sunday. (small clean lefts)

The thing goes great, really happy with it...

Turned really easy on my backhand, can't wait to get into some better surf with it.

At +/-120kgs it's probably as small as I want to go at this point, it's going to be interesting in the bumpy and choppy conditions...
