I was interested in this board but after trying the 3 Sunshine coast shops listed on the Starboard website as dealers I found out zero.
One had a recorded message and the other two sounded like they were disconnected.
Pretty sure one of them went out of business a while back.
This on a Sat morning.
Tried Goodtime in Brisbane.
They had no information on this model and would need to call the distributor on Monday and get back to me.
I just want to know if
A: they are available in Australia?
B: how much?
If anyone has one I'd like to know any thoughts about them too?
Might be wasting my time querying as not even sure if it's available in Australia.
If it isn't might interest will switch to an Open ocean 14' but no idea how much that is either.

Hey Cuttlefish, I don't think there are any of the 2011 Coast Runners in Oz, but why don't you give the guys at Auswind a call on Monday on 08 9244 4446. They will be able to tell you what is available.

Cost Runner looks good, lower rocker version of the Open Ocean, there is a long post about it on the Zone. I was actually going to get one instead of the Open Ocean but as I said there weren't any there - love the Open Ocean though, so all good!

Hi Johnathan, thanks. I suspected the coast runner didn't make it here. Read your report on the open ocean. Will have to wait until Monday to find out the cost I suppose.
The open ocean sounds like a good board.

Yeah that Open Ocean is a bloody good board. A significant evolution from last year's Elite Race 14. Why are you interested in the Coast Runner? What conditions do you paddle mostly?

I've been paddling my local rivers and also sometimes in the ocean but only when winds are light.
Not particularly interested in surfing waves as I'd rather ride my surfboards in waves.
The interest is in having a board that paddles along the coastline and will also paddle well in the sheltered waterways.
I'm after something with good glide, stability and enough floatation.
I'm still developing my stand up paddling skills. The great waves we had through autumn saw me surfing too much to get any stand up in.
Flat spells are when I want to paddle a sup.
Keen to have a stable board while my skills are developing as well and am not interested in racing board that substitutes speed for stability in rougher water.
I'm 6'1" and 92 kgs and if I want to take one of my daughters with me for a paddle (they are 9 and 11 respectively and both sub 30 kgs) my laguna bay 11'4" cruiser shape is not enough volume.
I like the inset deck of the open ocean/coast runner as has been mentioned it's possible to brace your feet against the edges and also I can sit my 3 yr old boy on the deck and take him for calm water paddles easily.
The higher volume starboards and Naish's that have a surfing planshape aren't going to be my choice when I want to paddle out to do a lap around Mudjimba island or a run up or down the coast except in calm conditions.
Spent too much time in the past paddling racing skis and good kayaks to try to hammer a square peg into a round hole.
Any idea what an open ocean sells for?

Here's a quote from a thread that echoes what I'm after although I'm heavier, not interested in racing in the least and I've been paddling flatwater...Point 1 in bold is what I'm looking for as my No 1 priority though I'm happy to paddle in the river as well and so the tides make it difficult when having to paddle when they are running.

"My first and only board is a 10-foot-something, surf-oriented SUP. Most of my paddling has involved chasing waves.

Now, I want a board that puts more emphasis on the paddling side of the equation. I'm probably about 75kg.

I've read heaps of posts, but I'm still basically confused. It's unlikely I'll get to demo lots of boards.

So, I thought I could outline my perceived needs and see if anyone has suggestions.

1) I live by the ocean and will primarily use the board to bomb around the coast and near-shore islands; I have to paddle when I have time, not when it's necessarily a good time to paddle. So a key requirement is a versatile board that functions well in a variety of conditions, of which glassy flat water is among the less likely. Also, "go fast and go far" is relative to what I do now, which is not fast and not far at all.

2) Yes, I want to do downwinders, but I doubt I would do them exclusively or on the scale seen in Hawaii or S. Africa.

3) If I ever entered a race, I would be more interested in the swag bag and refreshments at the finish line than where I might place.

4) Being able to strap a bag to the board would be a bonus.

5) I will have a surf-dedicated board, so surf-ability is not a key concern. That said, I can't imagine not trying to ride anything resembling a wave, even if it's just unbroken swells off shore or the waves on the way back into shore.

I'm having trouble envisioning the practical differences between a 12'6" vs. a 14' or a planing vs. a displacement hull. Much less differentiating among the brands. I'm assuming the board would fall within the referenced length range and that I will have to choose between the latter two design types. My assumption could be wrong. Thanks in advance".

The replies to this were interesting.

I have had a short paddle on a Fanatic Fly 14' but not sold on it.

Hi Cuttlefish,

The other board I believe you should look at is the K15, I read and re-read your needs and think it would be just about perfect.

Don't think that the K15 is just a flat water 'river' type board, I've used them for touring, downwinders and open ocean paddles. In fact I used one last year in the Doctor race from Rottnest Island, has more rocker than you might imagine and is great fun on waves - if slightly 'technical'

It's stable and fast and perfect for carrying gear and kids.

The only negative is that they are not easy in a cross wind because the nose gets pushed downwind, but IMO a small price to pay for all the benefits - I sold mine and I've always regretted it!

Hi Johnathan,
Thanks for your reply.
Dropped into the local shop that sells Starboards and they gave me a price on the coast runner $2290.
Strangely enough no price for the open ocean.
Didn't ask about the K15.
May be running into problems car topping and storing a board that long though.
The owner of the shop just happens to have a 12'6" race in the 31.5" width which has been paddled by him which he wants $1800 for so that one I can take for a paddle to see how it feels.
On a side note finally was able to convince my 2yr & 11 mth old son into standing up while hanging onto my legs (fully life jacket equipped) and coming for a paddle on my 11'4" in the river.
His toy dinosaur he took with him wasn't scared either.
He loved it and so I reckon I'll have a willing little passenger from now on.

Update 5/7th.
Took a Bark 14' expedition for a paddle today in stiff westerlies (offshores) in the local bay today and enjoyed paddling this board a lot more than I would with my 11'4" cruiser.
Still hard work paddling up wind but I'd say I would have been making little headway on my own board.
Found the bark to be very stable in the cross-chop and small swell rolling through.
Need to nut out the details (which one to choose red or yellow) and the deal will be done.
Looks like I can have either one (both in excellent cond) for a very, very good price and I'm sure it will be an excellent choice for me.
See how it goes as it well may make my 11'4" cruiser redundant.
Now just have to figure out how to pay for it.
Anyone want a DMS 5'6" mini-simmons?
The way things are going kids will be sup-ping them soon.
