I'm 2.1 meters tall and just getting into the sport, no where near me to test boards. Saw the Atlas Extra on line at 36" wide, can anyone give a US bloke the skinny on this board?

Will use 90% in flat water, some small waves just for fun.

Any other recommendations?

You didnt say how heavy that 2.1 mtr frame is but thinking not under 100 kgs?

I have the Avanti, and love it for the surf but dont use it much in flat water as I also have a 14'er but people have said its ok, i think it just has a little too much nose rocker for flatwater.

As for the Atlas extra, I would have thought for mostly FW then at 36" it would be too wide and stable. Ie have more stability than you need. Sir Cartoon has one he might add some comments later

Have you thought of the 12'6 touring, I used to have a 30' wide board and it was more than stable in FW but wasn't so much fun in choppy surf. I thought I would spend most time in FW and love the surf too much now.

Hope this helps

Hi mate, welcome to the big-boys toy corner

It'll depend a bit on your weight and balance and what you want to do with it. I have the 33" Atlas at 189cm, 123kg and balance-challenged, Great fun and versatile board if you're after a big-boy all-rounder. Mine will carry me and a 30kg kid no worries. A 6'10" 123kg mate has also been on it and declared it "a keeper". It's more than stable enough for most flat water and chop, has surprisingly good glide and goes fine in first waves up to about 4' or so. Highly recommended. Not sure really if the 36" Atlas Extra would be overkill, unless you're well over 300lbs?
Try a few if you can, figure out what you like. If it's mostly flat water you have in mind, you might want something longer & pointy.

Where are you located?

Thanks for the great feedback. I'm in Houston Texas and will be using it in the Bayou, up to 4 meter alligators in the Bayou so the stability is important.

Since I also want to hit a few waves at the beach I'm concerned about getting the right board.

you get something too narrow and i reckon there will be a fair bit of cursing going on.............particularly after you get a gator bite!!!
