Starboard Drive owners
Have any of you tried the whopper in surf?
I wonder how it compares to the Drive. Especially the Technora
I have a Drive and think it is wonderful but on those days when there is a lot of up and down movement in the ocean (pre and post storms) I reckon a bit more stability would be nice.
If the whopper is as agile as some say then it looks like it may be good swap.
I have seen it described as a big mans short board. I wonder how a lighter rider would go on one? I weigh 86 Kgs
Thanks

I've owned a drive and the went to a whopper selling the Drive.
Now I have a whopper and a hero 9'x33".
Unless you are really heavy (I'm 85kg) I'd suggest skip the Whopper and get the Hero, it's heaps faster, lighter, easier to pick up waves and still stable in choppy conditions.
1st thing I did was replace supplied side fins (they are crap, too flexy) with some glass m7s, huge improvement, now I've just replaced all fins with a set of super stiff, Shaper s9s, unfortunately can't give you a good opinion on these as yet cause I've only had one surf on them in tiny dribble.
I am lazy and love a stable board, if the surfs pumping I'm back out on my shortboard, but for fun and something that still turns and performs I can't put enough praise on the hero.
Mine is the TAC version.
I'd like to thank all my sponsors, Starboard, Shaper, Scotty @ Greenline, please send cheques for 6 figure sums as promise asap cause I need the money to buy the coopers I want to drink as they wont sponsor me, the tight bastards!... kidding

I would personally stick with the Drive. I have a 10'5 Kai'e'e by Tropical Blends, Fish. 29"1/2 wide, I find that to be plenty wide enough once riding. I think if you are having trouble balancing, you just need to rack-up more hours on the board, to develop the core strength. But it's a personal choice, you can sacrifice a little bit of maneuverability on the waves, for a little bit more paddling stability.....
Also compare to a Brewer Malibu, at 9'6 23" 3"1/4. This board is far more maneuverable than an SUP when surfing. It also has amazing paddle speed. Which is why Surf SUP's are getting smaller and smaller.
