Hey everyone,

Im a newbie and buying my first board on Saturday after trying out a few im going with the Starboard Whopper (which i hear most start out on)...I just wanted to know what the big difference is with the different types.

I am looking at either the starshot or AST Electri****here is a HUGE price difference and i just wanted to know in your guys opinion which would be better. Im pretty sure on the weekend it was the Electric one i was on as it had the green at the back.

Thanks for your help :)

Had an Avanti with the bamboo slats. Had a ridge form up the rail and follow in between the wood slats and up underneath the deck pad . The ridge turned into a crack and followed in between the wood . I took the board to a shaper / repairer and he said wood and boards dont mix . Dont know if this is common , probably not . Having said that i love that board to death and would get another one tomorrow . Got the repair done for 90 bucks and all good since .

I don't want to do a company out of a sale, but what mickyj said is correct - prepare to become obsessed. Which means that you may be looking for a different board in a few months (smaller, lighter, better in surf, etc.). So maybe starting with a used board would be a good idea (I don't have one for sale). That all depends on your wallet and likelihood of frequently getting in the water. But I thought I would try supping 18 months ago. I have five boards now...

Money isn't an issue so I'm going to buy new (i just prefer buying new...always have). Plus I plan on being in the water every chance I get...I live only a minute walk from the river so early mornings and weekends Ill be out :)
I've only been out a few times on demo boards and Im already obsessed..ive spent the last week just reading everything SUP haha.

Going into the store tomorrow to have a chat and hopefully come out with a board :)

Great choice mate. Whopper is a great board to start on. Kids and the cheese and kisses dig it too. It's a beast to ride.

cant go wrong with that purchase......people say its too fat and wide but it surfs good and the width is a major bonus in choppy conditions
