Hi guys,

I sup in Denmark - and it is getting cold, as in sub zero(Celsius). I sup in my oneill psycho freak 5.5/4.5. Generally a warm suit - but for various reasons I need something else. I also kite alot, and I'm considering something like this: Ion Fuse. http://www.ion-essentials.com/public/content/products/neoprene/wetsuits/series/fuse/wetsuit_products/drysuit_4_3_dl/

It is quite popular among kiters, but I'm not sure if it will be good for sup. The endless padling, ie to much wear in the shoulder area?!

Any comments or experiences will be appreciated :-)

I think you may be asking the wrong people because here in Australia it's never really cold enough to need to wear something like a dry suit.. I've never seen anyone wearing one and I live in one of the colder areas of Oz.

I think DJ is right Sandbag, us Aussies are the wrong ones to ask. I don't ever paddle in a wetsuit and the only one I own is a short john that I wear when longboarding in winter. I have an idea though, if you need to wear a dry suit to stay warm, I think you need to move to a warmer climate.ET.

Sub zero, that is some stoke, not sure I could manage that, seems easier to move.

I don't think anything you find is going to keep you warm, keeping you above freezing, would be a win.

My suggestion is look for arctic kayaking (not sure if this is a real thing) or some such craziness and research the gear some of these guys are utilising , adventure racing or whatever, there might only be one or a few small companies that make a suitable suit, but I'd be surprised if something wouldn't be available as a made to order type thing.

I think it is likely to be a dry suit, but yeah we no have no cold much, Maybe some surfers from the south island of New Zealand or northern Canada might be able to offer some advice too.

Good luck solving your problem.

Radiator pad powered by a battery pack that sits on you kidney area under your wetty, heats the blood as it flows around the circulatory system. You can buy on line I think.

We deal a lot with white water paddlers and rafties and they all go for full dry suits that you can wear normal thermal clothes underneath. That way you can layer up depending on the temp. Also they are way more flexible than any 5 mm neo suit will ever be. Have a look at kayaking websites like Immersion Research , Kokotat or Palm. Ion or NP may do something like these but we dont get them in Oz. These things are serious units and really work. Good luck.

I have had a go at the dry suits in Tassie mid winter. The definately do the trick and mobility isn't really much of an issue as they aren't particularly tight. The only thing that put me off is as the seals are so tight its was a bit of a pain to get on and off in comparison to a wetty.

For sub zero, the dry factor and the fact that you don't need to strip in the car park (to get a wetty on) in the first place, I reckon they'd be worth a go for sure. Keeping the feet and hands warm will be the key!
