Nup. I warm up a bit by swinging the arms, twisting the hips etc but no serious stretching. I prefer to stretch at home when I'm not surfing.

I was thinking with no work out before hand there is a lot of pressure on the hips and groin area. Shoulders warm up fairly quick.

Just asking to avoid anymore problems than the 1000 i have already

not a great idea to stretch cold , if your an old fella and you dont want injuries before you get the board of the racks , go for a light jog up the beach first, get the muscles warm and then do some.Dynamic stretches are best to warm up without the risk of injury.

I am very cynical about the claimed benefits of stretching. Warming up on the other hand is a very good thing to do and gentle stretching is probably an ok way to warm up.

I stretch down when I pick up the board when I drag it into the water..

We warm up before every session and stretch as well. Mainly using the same motions that you use to paddle. I agree a jog is a good idea as well.

Each to thier own.

thats because its so figgin cold down there phil, now if you moved your lot up here you all would be in sun protection right now, thats right, waves and 24-25 c.seriously tho og.back and shoulder warm ups in the cooler months are a must, but as soon as you hit the cold water your body shuts down again and stiffens up,perhaps those that can jog a bit could warm up.all sound too hard

I swing my arms and wave my paddle around a bit. Maybe touch my toes if I'm feeling particularly frisky. NB I do all this on the board after I launch.

Just like an engine, it's always best to bring it up to
operating temperature before applying load.
Stretching while cold isn't good for you.
I know it but I don't always do it.

I agree.. It's been freezing here lately..

I'l be wearing my wettie today on our down-winder and if I fall in I try not to let my head go under and get an icecream headache..

Great photo Dave! That's a cracker!!
Don't do a hellava lot of stretching before a paddle and like Jack Mack, I know I should probably do more.
I tend to launch first, have a slow paddle for about 5 mins to warm up and then do a few back and shoulder stretches using the paddle.

Cold Stretching is Not a good idea and should never be done.

This is because your muscles are cold and need to warm. Best to either go for a mellow 5min paddle or jog and then stretch. There really is no need to stretch before a work out but it is very important to stretch post workout.

Post workout your muscles are warm and that's when you will get the full benefit of stretching without doing damage.

Cold muscles don't stretch, only warmed up muscles do. Cold muscles can snap easier if you are trying to stretch them hard.

"After" every Fitness group i get the ladies to go thru a full stretch routine with me on the sand.

Do 1 yoga session per wk and you will be amazed how much better you will feel for it.

So get the blood flowing to them before you try and stretch them hard.

Hope this helps.

ABSOLUTELY!! I agree ang....

you need to warm up - or could run the risk of future injuries. After coming back from my shoulder injury - i stretch before and after every surf/ sup/ paddle. I find this has helped keep the pain away..but also keep my shouulder recovery on track.

I've seen to many surfers with troubles with neck/ back/ shoulders from years of abuse (and not stretching!)

maybe so.... but doesnt mean you shouldn't stretch. due to prone surfiong I have specific exercises for my neck too.... either way your whole body should be warmed up!

you do need to be warmed up before stretching. for surfing or supping i wouldn't over stretch. a mid stretch sitting on the board and stretching hamies, gluts and aductors i have found to be good. post stretching is also good, but again i wouldn't extend the muscles to much. if you wont more flexiblity you need to set aside sessions in there own right and there is an order of muscles to stretch
cheers
ps when i use to compete in another sport, i used to stretch at least 2 hrs a day

I personally warm up prior to light stretching and then paddle to the lineup via the longest possible route. Yes I have injured myself supping and to be honest if I had had warmed up and stretched appropriately I very well may not have !! As an afterthought it would even make sense to warm up/stretch prior to taking the sup off the roof off the car or carrying it to the beach. Doesn't take much of a gust of wind or mishandling a sup to damage shoulders/heads/necks/cars/others and not to mention the board itself.
IF YOU DO NOT WARM UP AND STRETCH AND PREPARE YOUR BODY FOR SUPPING/SURFING - YOU WILL EVENTUALLY GET INJURED.
