I'm planning to take the next school holidays off with the kids and head up to my old home town of Caves Beach on the southern fringe of Newcastle. Has anyone any suggestions for a newbie break around there or the Central Coast?
Thanks

If you want to take a quick trip south then it would be hard to go past Umina Beach. Very close to the perfect newbie SUP wave especially at the southern end.
Good luck.

Thanks supgman!
Has anyone tried the Mawson breakwater at Caves Beach?

Out behind the rock at Frenchmans is perfect for SUPs. Hams or Caves Reef when the swell is the right size is really fun and uncrowded. Enjoy.

Yes, the reefs off and directly around caves are as good as you can get and reasonably Sup friendly. You can even luck the odd uncrowed session at Crabs Creek.
The left off Mawson's is an intense wave that breaks infrequently. From what I know, the right needs it big. It's a remote sort of wave where you would not want to injure yourself.
I had a bit of fun on the SUP at Pilots under Marine Rescue at the Heads a few weeks back. At the mid sized waves, it had one of the heaviest drops I have ridden. The right off Moon Island is similar.
Beach break wise, you are not far from Catherine Hill Bay, where it can be less crowded around the middle.

Fantastic! I can almost walk there with the board at Caves/Hams/Frenchmans. Catho is under 10 mins in the car...
Thanks lads!
