Hi All,

I am new to the Sunshine Coast and have been living here close on a month. I spotted some posts in the forums about spots to SUP up here which was helpful.

The question/problem is this and I need some advice. The SE wind seems to be blowing 20knts every day and that messes the majority of spots up, besides Noosa that is, which is a long drive for me during the week

I have been on my shortboard a lot surfing due to the constant strong winds.

So question is - is this normal for the Sunny Coast or are we just in a bad patch ? I flogged all my kiting gear before heading up here and now I am thinking that is not a smart idea.

Any input/spots would be greatly appreciated. I ride the 8'6 Fanatic and been SUP'ing for close on 4 years so happy for mellow/hollow waves... or is it time to start looking at Gumtree for some kite gear

I noted it was a secret spot... was pushing my daughter into waves there yesterday afternoon and noted pretty much any-one who owned a paddle was on it !

Southerlies blow from mid December through to April, not normally as consistent as lately but not the best time of year for SUP. After April the winds drop off through to August when the westerlies kick in, then northerlies in October. January thru April isn't great for SUP on the Sunny Coast, few sheltered breaks and those that are will be busy. Good time to get the short board or fish out, you could also buy a kite and make the most of it.

Yip - been on my short/fun board most of the time which makes the onshore slop rideable. Another tangent here - at Mooloolaba on Sunday I spotted a few people on 12" and 14" SUP Boards - are SUP Down winders something that happens up here and if so which route ? I have noted that there are flat water races at Kawana Waters but have not read up about Down Winders. I am originally from Cape Town and there the down wind scene was big.

Alex usually has some fun ones usually on the SE's but gets a bit lumpy with too much E. Otherwise the Maroochy river mouth can get good on the high tide when there is enough swell.
