Howdy all.

Question arises from a session at the weekend where I snapped the blade on my Fanatic Carbon Pro paddle.
It was about 1 1/2 years old and 100% exclusive surf used.
Decent wipe out on a good size overhead wave and Bam blade snapped in half.

Being that it is the 3 paddle I have broken ( One prior Fanatic, one Hobie) and a good mate has snapped Starboard Tiki 100% Carbon and a no name brand.

Leads the question.

Are Carbon paddles not up to the added stresses of the Surf? Are the sudden impact of wave and body weight too much for them?

What is the tuffest and yet light paddle most recommended???

Ke Nalu, Quickblade or other? Is the added expense justified? Given that you can't avoid odd impacts when out in the waves gets me to wondering?

I have been supping about 4 years now so am curious as a number of blokes I know experience the same problem.

Pity is that Fanatic do not offer a replacement blade as the shaft and T handle are perfect.

Thanks Paul,

But it is not the shaft, I have done the blade as has my mate.

Shafts have been OK

Water pressure in waves can be tremendous. Especially if you fall on them (as you said "body weight"). And if something is gonna break, having the blade a bit weaker by design than the shaft could make sense as a safety measure: a shaft breaking in your hand can be quite dangerous splinters-wise.

I have broken a paddle by falling on it and I was glad it broke (at the blade/shaft junction), otherwise it could have been some of my bones...

Where did you get that info from?
There ain't such a thing as Ke Nalu factory seconds in Australia. If any imperfect components are found they are either returned to the factory or destroyed.
There have been a few seconds available in the US some time ago but they are few and far between these days.

I'd go KeNalu anyway, any paddle can snap with some of the stresses placed on them, but I would put money on the KeNalu being the least likely, I've been using then for years and swear by them.
I have snapped a couple of other brands but haven't had a KeNalu fail yet.
And no I am not sponsored or connected in any way shape or form, just a happy customer.

The Kialoa GL Surf paddle has a reinforced blade for exactly this reason. It's a brute, much thicker than any other carbon blade I've seen. There is a video somewhere of Dave Chun saying that people have been using race paddles in the surf and breaking the blades, which is why he and Gerry Lopez had made the blade of their surf paddle so beefy. Could be a solution?
