How many out there switch feet, natural to goofy. My 2 home breaks are left handers on my forehand as such my backhand riding is getting worse as I just don't go right much any more. Having 30 years wave sailing I feel at home carving of either stance but have never done so on surfboards or the SUP.

I certainly vary my stance a lot - sometimes on launch and when on a longer board, mid ride. But... you say your home break is left and you surf that frontside ? - so I have to assume you stand goofy footed then? If you are used to having either stance... then go for it - I think this gives you more variety to your ride experience - even though, every wave is different!

Yep Goofy footed, Its just funny when looking at SUP videos you don't see a whole lot of backhand riding, so I was thinking there must be a lot of switch stance riders out there always riding frontside left and right.

Hmmm.. interesting observation. I am going to be watching others now. I do know that I vary back/frontside on smaller waves.... but once they get to a certain height... I dont like to have my "back to the wall" if I can help it. No reason, just feel more in control - regardless of what stance I am in.One more point - I think the stance you start off with - can depend on what side you find yourself paddling in on. Left side... drop the left leg back - right side, right leg back. Maybe?

Hi,

I have a windsurfing background as well and find switch foot to be really easy, it feels more natural to me than surfing backhand these days.
Restricting my self to one stance direction seems really weird these days. I am pretty sure it came from a combo of windsurfing and riding switchfoot on a snowboard.

Cheers Chris

I surf natural, but used to skateboard goofy up until the mid 90's. I started switchfooting on sup coz it was easier to paddle into waves. But I switch back to natural stance just before I go for a floater or the wave is going to shut down heavily. I'm now switch footing a lot on my longboard simply coz its fun

John Monie was the best natural switch footer that I have seen in the flesh - and he would do it in critical parts of the wave!
