hoping for some wisdom from other 'breezers...
I'm fresh off the boat, new to Aus, & loving the paddling & vibe in my local around Melbourne.
My job has me off to Tanilba Bay, Port Stephens, for 2 weeks.
I'm sure I'll have some time on my hands & google earth paints a pretty picture of Port Stephens - what's the paddling like?
Do I schlepp up a 14' race/touring board (I'm driving, but space is at a premium) or do I toss the 10' isup in the back?
input/comments/suggestions welcome.

There's both flat water and surf options. Flat water within walking distance and surf spots a short drive away. As what to bring, depends on what you enjoy most.

Komsup,
Nozza needs a board to be picked up in Sydney - a board that you would approve of, btw.
Give him a call - you might be able to work something out re transporting it for him plus paddling for yourself.

One of the most beautiful places imaginable. On the south side, the golden sand inshore beaches start at Nelson Bay. Even nicer on the southern shore and the ocean beaches during winter.

Tanilba Bay is a bit more toward the back of the Port. Still great paddling, but more mangroves and oysters.

Heaps of offshore places to paddle like either side of Fingal Island. If you are a bit more adventurous there is lots of interesting coast to explore.

Good SUP surf at One Mile, Fingal, Birubi..,,,,,

Make room and take both boards??????? A month won't be enough!!!!

Just moved to nelsons bay, we had some pretty good bay surf the other week when the cyclone waves hit. the waves were in the middle of the bay (there's a sand bank) so bit of paddle unless you had a boat. but worth it as you could ride the waves for a few hundred meters. i don't currently SUP but hoping to get into it soon, went out on my surf ski but their were about 5 people on SUPs having a good ol time.
as for other good places to ride waves, the southern end of fingal bay has a nice wave that comes around the rocky head, always a few people on SUPs there.
but yeah the rest of the bay is good for a paddle around, things your likely to see (that i have seen in the past 4 weeks):\
lots and lots of dolphins, some will come right up to you to suss you out
penguins
turtles
jumping fish

other things i have seen but not recently:
Seals
whales

In a sou Wester there's an awesome down wind run as well. The State Titles there a few years ago was one of the best races ever.
