I've tried this now a few times but yet to pull it off.
I was sure it could be done, now there's proof. So I guess I gotta keep trying.

Ah but looking at it again I've only tried on what would be my forehand. Wonder which way would be easier?

I've seen a few guys pull this off. Namely Tom Carroll on the old yellow 92AA that Lummer's used in the Oz titles. When you see it for the first time you do a double take - did I really see that!!
It was a pretty decent size as well - 5-6' faces - crumbly top.
I imagine it helps to have a fuller nose to get a decent rebound off the top!

Practice, practice guys!!

This is called a 'paddle out take off' - something we started doing around 1980 on the goatboats. It is a lot easier to do on a goaty and can be done into the lip even on quite large waves (12 foot faces).

I have managed 3 now on the Standup in waves about 5 foot face and it feels unreal although it is hard to maintain balance on the way back down.

I heard form the nth curly boys that Tom Carrol did one out there on about a 12 foot face!! But he is a 'crazy man'
