I was paddling out at Palmy this morning not long after sun-up. I could see Sam from WS&Snow and a guy that looked like CASSO surfing with him (bright green boardies were a give away).

As I approach I had to take a double take - he looked nothing like the CASSO we surfed with at MAMBO. I seriously thought I was mistaken.

I've heard of guys and girls trimming down from SUP but this is ridiculous! How much did you drop CASSO?

Any other good stories out there!

Ha, that's funny AA.

Yeah, I've dropped a bit of excess baggage. I've lost 10kgs since I started SUPing, 12 months ago. The last 5 of those kgs has been since Mambo (about 3 months ago) when that first photo was taken.

I put that intensive last 5kgs down to riding a smaller board (I got my 9'3" not too long after getting back from Mambo) and heaps more time in the water (due to being out of work since Dec).

I haven't change my (not so good) diet at all - it's all due to SUPing (and a bit of landscaping in my backyard).

The power of SUP!

Casso, thats so cool mate to get fit doing something you love, yeah, so much more hard work on the shorter boards, I would love to get that fit but hard to break those few beers every night after a hard day.

It isn't neccessarily the grog.
I lost 5 kilos in 6 weeks eating ckicken breasts, lean low fat mince and rye bread with low fat cheese and tomatoes, lettuce, shallotts.
Low fat yogurt for sweets. Last thing, didn't use oil at all for cooking, just heat pan really hot first and the meat doesn't stick.
Drank as much as usual (beer) (heaps) and still lost weight. Walked a lot though as I was locum for 6 weeks and had no private transport.
Just arrived back from East Timor recently where I started the giardia diet. Very effective.
8 kilos off in 6 weeks

I think I will just stick with paddling harder and longer Elbeau! You get to eat lots AND drink beer

When I started SUP'ing I was training pretty hard on my MTB. I was sure I would put on weight when I stopped training. I didn't and I also did not lose leg strength, which blew me away. When you go from riding 3 times a week to once a fortnight it usually hurts every time you ride. I have lost my endurance but the legs are always good for climbing, thanks to SUP!

The magic of SUP is that you get fit and your having so much fun, you don't even know about it!

Give it a few years and it will be standard cross training for a whole lot of different sports.

I've been saying it for years too.

It is just habit get home nothing much to do have a beer/wine get the nibbles out great to relax I loved it, bit too much really.

First week is the hardest especially if you have a tough day or a good surf/sup/kite/etc.

Your body loves alcohol and will metabolise it first and store anything else to the side in the form of fat to use later.

When you drink you usually get cravings for salty,
fatty foods. This is stored for later use. (stored energy)

To release this fat store you need to work your butt off untill the well documented "second wind" kicks in. That is your body releasing its stored energy

Resting your liver during the week is a great idea as long as you can avoid a binge on the weekend.

I have to admit I'm also a bit of a loser..

I've weighed 87 for as long as I can remember and in the last couple of years I snuck up to 90 for the first time in my life and many pairs of boardies and jeans would no longer fit.. Well now I'm down to 85 and I feel great.. My jeans and boardies fit again and the small rolls of fat on my stomach are now muscle.

It must be the paddling.

Well done Casso.. I'm looking forward to seeing the new Casso at this years Mambo..

Mac...I used to do this a bit too until I found out it has the opposite effect that you want. When you don't feed your body every 3-4 hrs, it actually goes into "survival" mode where it thinks you may be starving or in famine. So you body stores the fat in preparation for not getting food. It's getting ready for the famine. You will never lose weight if you only eat 1 meal a day. Your body will hold onto all the fat to "survive".

You gotta start eating small meals, good snacks every 3-4 hours to reboot your metabolism and stopping drinking also does this. It takes about 2 weeks for your body to reboot and then the weight will start dropping off.

I've lost 3 kg's in 4 weeks from not drinking, eating good snacks more (handful of almonds), swimming 2 x week and lots of paddling. Good luck all !!

P.S. A group of my girlfriends actually conduct a 6 week weight lose challenge between them 2 x year. It's for 6 weeks. They each throw in $100. And at the end of the six weeks the person who lost the most weight takes all the cash. Last time there were 10 in it so the winner got $1000. It's based on the % of weight lose of your starting weight. ie. If a 100 kg person and a 120kg person both lost 8kg...the 100kg person would win as it is a higher percentage of his starting weight.

Maybe you "Seabreezer" willing might want to start a challenge like this. ?? It certainly helps get you started and more motivated knowing others are doing it too and makes it a bit more fun also.

The spare tyre that was developing before starting SUP would now only fit a Mini rather than the full offroad version spare that was on offer before.

Have dropped about 6 kilos by getting back out there on the SUP and also not eating bread and staying off the beer during the week. Another 5 - 6 kgs would be great.
