Hi LSD,
I just got back from Hamilton Island after spending a week there. Weather was excellent for SUP most mornings with wind ranging from 0 knots through to about 15k. Marine life was pretty active as well with lots of things to see.

Not sure about July/Aug but it was certainly pleasant last week! Would have spent all day out if I could!

I just wish I had brought my own equipment with me as some Islands don't have any equipment to hire.

LSD, Wifey and I paddled sea kayaks for 12 days around the Whitsundays in May some years ago. While it is beautiful it was not what we expected.ie. not many sandy beaches, quite a bit of rough water and wind.
It was fantastic camping on the islands and because most people are on boats we didnt have to share a camp site at all.
I would do it again in a sea kayak but I think I would keep the SUP to day trips when you can forcast the weather and you wont get stuck for days at one island or another. The day trips would be great, especially with some goggles etc on board.
Also we had to take a lot of gear(including water) and could not have carried the weight on a SUP

Hey LSD,
Nice place to paddle around. plenty of marine life. Come about 1 and half to the north and you may get waves.
July / August may still contain some offshore mornings

Quite possible to get constant SE for most of JULY and early
AUGUST. strength we have experienced vary from 10-20knt
that time of year but clear water and clear skies.. take a chance
it could be truly perfect... who knows what the weather holds
these days. I got a great book i can loan you called 100 MAGIC MILES.
If you want ill bring it down this week if we get any swell and PRN is
working.

Hi LSD,

I live on Hayman Island for the last two years so know the whits pretty well, just be aware that june/july is our whale season, we've had some interesting times (near misses!) with these inquisitive beasties checking us out whilst paddling!!

Yeah I been there a bunch, my parents live in Airlie Beach. I think it would be great to paddle around. I rekon the best way to do it would be to rent a Catamaran or monohull for 4 to 6 days and take your SUP with you. Most of the mooring spots for boats (Cid habour, Tongue Bay, Nara Inlet, Butterfly Bay, Whitehaven etc) are protected from the SE trades and would be perfect to paddle. All the good coral is also protected from the SE and a SUP would be perfect to check out the reef. Better than a tender. Myself and a bunch of friends took a Cat out for 5 nights and every day we would comment how good it would be if we had our SUPs.

Usually the wind comes up after 12pm each day from the SE over the winter months so July/August should be much the same. But SE can last a lot later into the year. I got married up there last November and SE was still consistent every day, 3 weeks straight. The strongest being around 25 knots but usually calm early then 10kts to 20kts in the arvo.

The wife got this shot of me at Daydream. Sooo much fun! Nothing to do with SUP but just love the shot.
