Yeah I been there a bunch, my parents live in Airlie Beach. I think it would be great to paddle around. I rekon the best way to do it would be to rent a Catamaran or monohull for 4 to 6 days and take your SUP with you. Most of the mooring spots for boats (Cid habour, Tongue Bay, Nara Inlet, Butterfly Bay, Whitehaven etc) are protected from the SE trades and would be perfect to paddle. All the good coral is also protected from the SE and a SUP would be perfect to check out the reef. Better than a tender. Myself and a bunch of friends took a Cat out for 5 nights and every day we would comment how good it would be if we had our SUPs.
Usually the wind comes up after 12pm each day from the SE over the winter months so July/August should be much the same. But SE can last a lot later into the year. I got married up there last November and SE was still consistent every day, 3 weeks straight. The strongest being around 25 knots but usually calm early then 10kts to 20kts in the arvo.
The wife got this shot of me at Daydream. Sooo much fun! Nothing to do with SUP but just love the shot.
