I think a while back there was a discussion on this forum about putting decals over other shapers brands and claiming it's their own. Well it seems JL is still in battle over this with starboard. What's your thoughts? Didn't know how to copy so here is the link....

Cant understand why Starboard would do this?? Surely they have a heap of pics of Connor shredding up waves and paddling downwind (on a starboard). False advertising in my book!

I posted this because I remember some saying that in the surfing world this is common practice. I could be wrong about the interpretation of the argument that was presented here but when I saw this on facebook I remembered a topic here.

It is common in the surfing world for surfers to ride other peoples boards and then add their sponsors stickers.

You will often see a shaper decal in between the feet and a different brand sticker further up the board in the normal place. It's common when say a surfer from Brazil comes to the Snapper event and gets boards from a local guy.

It's kind of becoming less and less though as money contracts do not really exist as much as before, nobody has any money to give to team riders but surfers can not make money without equipment. Top shapers will have it known that if you cover their stickers you will not ever get another board from them.

You will never ever see a shaper do an ad with someone elses shape in the Ad though, it would spread quickly and bring much embarassment to the brand. People do make mistakes though, the interesting thing with this Starboard Ad is that I am sure I have seen a picture of Connor riding this board on a left and JL took a shot at them at that point, now they have done it again..... Who knows why??

Maybe its common practice to photoshop a wetsuit or boardshort sponsor logo etc on the board but not another board logo and then advertise that the reason he is ripping is due to a board he is clearly not riding, got me stumped this one???

Dazza sorry if I confused you. Wasn't really pointing or answering anyone in my post just remembering a topic here and saw this on facebook. I think CMC summed it best so far.

I think if he payed for the boards he can sticker them any way he wants. But if the boards were given to him it's wrong and deceiving .

Now here is something I just realized about this argument as I looked at this page.........The picture of the Jimmy Lewis rider doing the cutback on the banner in this page is mine. I gave the picture to the rider Masao for free and he showed it to Jimmy Lewis. Jimmy Lewis liked it so much he wanted it in their catalog and for their use in advertising. Jimmy personally called me and asked to pay for it and I told him he can have it for free and use it wherever since I am an amateur and just stoking friends out. Trippy.....

Aloha

P.S. I have no dog in this fight cause you all know I am a PSH pimp...

Mate I think if a board is payed for it's your property , stickers can be taken off. But if it's deceitful that's another mater.

But Connor is not winning in the surf, yep as a racer he is simply awesome but he is not known for his wave riding (that is not to say that he isn't an awesome wave rider but he is most marketable as a racer). I would probably question the wisdom of using the shot again, however, we are probably not aware of the whole story. It is interesting that the custom board is delivered without any design on it at all, perhaps allowing stickering to take place. Im not saying what is right and what is wrong, I would just suggest that there is probably a whole lot going on that us on the outside are not aware of.

it is deceiving imo. if s/b are using another companies boards and stickering them with their logo, well how fake can you get. even if conner is using someone elses boards and puts the stickers on,it is still sucky of s/b to use it in their adds as it is not their board, team rider(haha) or not. you must not be very confident of your product if you have to use anothers brands board. it would be like serving one coffee brand then use it as your own, with your own cup

Kelly Slater used Simons boards but still had Al Merrick on them as well, but there was disclosure of this. And they didnt use pics of him using a Simon but advertising an Al merrick so no probs.

Maybe but if its in his contract it's fine. People do it in every sport. One thing that you cant take away from the kid he rips. Great paddler and represents his sponsors name, what more do you want!

It is really common for surfers to ride other shapers boards and sticker them up with there own spono logo as they have to as are paid to ride for that brand but they don't normally put stickers over the shapers logo... Though Jimmy was silly enough to give Connor a board without any logos?? Connor has to sticker it up that's what he is paid for ... But i honestly find it very funny that stArboard would use jimmy board in there advert and claim it as there own shows they don't look into what they are using or don't Care ... If any shortboard shaper did this they would be be laughing stock of the industry .... I don't even think the photo is that crash hot anyway.

Agree jimmy should use it for his own marketing,

THINKING OF BUYING A STARBOARD SUP....? THINK JIMMY LEWIS SUP BOARDS, the board of choice for starboard team rider Conner Baxter!

Unless there was some agreement between them?

As i replied to the thread passing itself as this thread!

That is BS, I will never ever buy a Starboard given the clear proof of what i have seen, i cant believe they sticker up the board and pose in photos with it let alone create double page ads!

Could you imagine the outrage if Ferrari bought a Porsche and re badged it as a Ferrari because it was faster and/or better and took out full page adverts with it claiming multiple race victories?..........laughing stock and major lawsuit.

Maybe 1 time you can made a mistake but this is the 3rd time!!!
And Connors is winning races using a S.I.C. board (Sandwich Island Creations: Connor in fact won all three races at the Hawaii Triple Crown series using his SIC board and Starboard claimed 3 Starboard victories)..
Is a bit like if in F-One Ferrari get a Red Bull racing car, change the paint, WIN and then say that Alonso won a Ferrari...
Not very ethical..
In surfing the board doesn't make that huge difference but in Racing I think it does..
If a brand keep winning races for sure people will automatically associate the brand being the one with the faster board.

I've said it before, but the problem can be solved by renaming both brands Jimmystar Lewisboards.

I have never posted on a forum. But – after reading the posts on this subject, I felt it was time to give some background and insight to this subject.

My husband Keith Baxter - was really close friends with Jimmy Lewis – since the early 1970's. Keith helped Jimmy through a very hard and tough time of his life. And, Keith helped save Jimmy's life.

This obviously created a bond / friendship between Keith and Jimmy (over 40 years). So, when Keith or our two kids Ashley and Connor, needed custom boards – we went to Jimmy.

Jimmy made custom boards – for many pro athletes. Tow-in boards, surfboards, kiteboards, windsurfing boards, and now SUP boards. Jimmy also knew that these riders were sponsored by other companies.

But it was important for Custom Board Shapers like Jimmy, to make boards for Pro Athletes – even if they were sponsored by other companies.

Connor's first windsurfing board was made by Jimmy – when Connor was 8 years old. Connor was sponsored by Starboard at that time – but not one company in the windsurfing industry made small wave boards for a 35 lb kid. So, we had it made Custom.

Seven years later, Connor wanted a SUP gun – for big surf – Jaws, Sunset. This is before Starboard was making Guns. So – we asked Jimmy to make Connor a custom SUP gun. He was happy to do so – and made it totally white – did not even put a Jimmy Lewis logo on it – so that Connor could put all of his Sponsors logos on it. And – we PAID for this board!

Jimmy – knows that Connor is sponsored by Starboard. And, he knows that photos will be taken of him on that board and used.

In a comment from JL USA posted on Standup Zone's forum on January 30th – Jimmy admittedly states:

“I had adopted the policy of not making any custom boards for any riders who represented other companies, specifically for the reason that this problem is happening.”

Jimmy Admits he makes custom boards for riders representing other companies –and adopted a NEW policy not to make boards for them anymore – because of “problems”.

So – Jimmy – you made the board for Connor – had us pay for this board – and then adopted this NEW policy – but never let us know about your new policy.

Was this a Set Up?? After a 40 year relationship with our family – you set Connor up. A 15 year old kid! You used my son.

Why?? Oh – to sue Starboard for Money. The American Way. Don't make it – sue for it. Sell a board to a 15 year old sponsored kid – adopt a new policy – don't let the 15 yr old or the sponsor know of the new policy – and then sue!!

Jimmy - you destroyed relationships between our families. My daughter Ashley and your son Marlon both 21 years old – birthdays a couple months apart – grew up together. I've known you since 1985 – meeting you in Paia in Doug Hunts Surf Shop. And, Keith – you've known him since the 70's.

In the end – what have you accomplished?

One thing for sure – I have Zero respect for You. Setting up a 15 year old kid is pretty low Jimmy!! And, seriously - this is your pay back for my husband helping save your LIFE?

To all the readers – Connor nor Starboard did anything wrong. It has been standard practice in the water sports industries for athletes – pushing the limits – pushing themselves – ahead of the norm – or smaller than most in their sport – to order custom boards for their needs. And, there are custom board shapers that make these boards. And still do.

It is that simple.
