For anyone interested.

The link below is to a manufacturing forum thread where Bert Burger lifts the veil of secrecy on Vacuum bagging and sandwich construction to allow smaller manufacturers to create custom boards with this technology. This lead to a massive shift particularly in the USA after Clark foam shut down. It will give you an insight into how your production SUP boards are made.

The Vid below is about Bert. Bert is a legendary nice guy and a crazy scientist.

Berts a legend alright.. I have a had a couple of sunovas over the years and reading that swayloks thread a few years ago gave me the confidence to build a 6'2" fish using balsa/paulownia over EPS core.

I have an old delaminated 6'4" balsa skinned sunova in the shed at the moment thats having a makeover/conversion into a kiteboard, top decks been stripped off and foam reshaped (volume reduction) and new paulownia deck and fin inserts to be added.

I thought Simondo would have been onto this thread.

2011 really has to be the year I make some more of my own boards, I made 2 last year, one which I rode for a while, the other I fully handshaped and did not bother glassing. I have quite a few blanks and I'm ready to go. I'd love to try some of Berts stuff on them......

Bert has inspired me again.

Is anyone else here making their boards?

Hey CMC
I made a Hollow Wood Sup at 11'9 two years ago and is still my go to board for a great surf. I have a 9'6 that I love but really this timber board is the one I love to surf. It has soul and feels great under foot. It just sings in the waves and being hollow it sounds like a drum skin when the water moves under it or you move your feet on her. You should all give it a try. Check out my build thread. maybe not a good read but the pics will give you an idea,
Cheers Scott

I picked up an order of paulownia timber a few weeks ago, 100 by 8, 100 by 6 and 100 by 4mm. The plan was to build a solid timber kite surfboard about 5'11" by 19" by 1.5" thick by laminating the 8mm sheets together and not using any glass just oil it on the outside. But I have been riding an old poly 6'10" with fat rails with planty of volume thats being going great so plan is now to fix the 6'4" bert burger and re vacumm bag the deck using the 4mm paulownia and use that as my strapless KB..

I probally have enough timber to build a hollow timber 9'2" quad so may do that. I was going to build a 14 foot down winder but I dont think I have the skills to shape something that big.

Too bloody hot in the shed to do anything at the moment anyway..
