Melbourne has been hit with a sudden heatwave and it's been great paddling the last few days.. but the problem is every few minutes of paddling I almost fall over the front of my board as it stops as my fin hits a big jelly.. Yes the jellies are back.. and they're everywhere.. and they're big buggers.

Here's a few pictures from yesterday.

They sorta irritate the skin as well, nothing like blue bottles or those little red ones we
get in the bay but when you get back to the beach you just have little itches.

Do they grow really fast or something? They are meant to start growing after lots of rain
which we had in October followed by dry sunny conditions and rising water temp but these
jellies seem too big in to short of time!

If they are small brown Mutton birds or Shearwater's, we have the same here around this time of year. Thousands migrate & normaly follow high wind patterns. We have had very little wind in vico that they like & some weak/sick birds just dont make it with out the wind assist. Same happends even when windy, weak birds resting in the surf.

It's fun kiteboarding in the glassy water in the lee of the breakwater at Sandringham. Hitting the jellies is like riding over ripple strip. Badoomp. Badoomp. Badoomp. Badoomp.

I haven't been stung by any but I got slimed by a big one in the water. Scared the crap out of me and it took ages to get the slime off my hand.

DJ, They are some ugly looking things you've got down there lol.

Me and my mate (Jasleigh) did a nice ocean downwinder last week and i saw the biggest jelly fish ever! The thing was massive. Big brown and round, i'd the size of a large coffee table. I crapped myself and paddle quikly away from it.

put a weed fin off a windsurfer (like jp weed wave 21 or 26) in ya board and see if that helps when paddling.

Great idea.. George Greenough made a s/s fin for his windsurfer and made it nice and sharp so he could carve up the sharks when he sees them..

He told my once that the water would sometimes explode behind him when he hits them.. and sometimes they have also taken chase after him.

Dean and Angie.. Jeez those are biggun's alright.. I'd be keeping clear of those.

Hay.. Mybrosweeper.. This was my other post about these jellies.. www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=48627&SearchTerms=the,jellies,are,back

I took a few more pics today.

At the end of last summer I came off my windsurfer and did a face plant into the centre of a big jelly....gave me an itchy chin for a while! hehe

Also, it's fun when sailing late after work during the week - it's just on dark and, inevitably, I am out some distance from shore and water starting in the dying seabreeze and you get bumped in the legs by something...you know it's a jelly, but it's dark and you can't see and they can sometimes feel a bit bigger than they are. Anyway, after years of surfing pretty sharky places out in SA you gotta be fatalistic about big munchies in the water. More people die from toasters each year than sharks!

Wow - very interesting given Japan is also having hassles with jelly fish.

In Sydney we have been wondering where all or jellyfish have gone. A few (probably 4-5) years ago it was infested in Botany bay with the same if not more jelly fish in the 3rd pic in this thread.

Since then there has been next to none.

But on that note - please keep your mexican snotters to yourselves!

Hi Dean.. It's just a little iPod shuffle and not waterproof.

You can buy them new on ebay for about $40...

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Apple-iPod-Shuffle-1GB-Silver-Earphones-USB_W0QQitemZ370287467870QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_MP3_Players?hash=item5636da5d5e

Sooo.. I must remember to take my hat off before going for a swim..

Jonathan has a waterproof one but they cost a fair bit I think.

Flat water paddling with music is great.

I just got a waterproof pouch for my Iphone and some great waterproof sennheiser headphones. best part about it is that I can listen to tunes and also have a GPS tracking program going on my phone that gives me stuff like distance travelled, average speed and some cool graphs that shows when you pick up runners and how far/fast you travel when your on them!! got the pouch from BCF and the headphones from JB hifi.

We had a lesson at the marina today with 20 year 10 students from the Melbourne area. They had a blast and really enjoyed checking out the jellyfish----although I had to try and refrain them from chopping off their tentacles with the paddles! They were picking up the dead jellyfish from the beach and throwing them around like big jelly bombs.

One of the kids got slimed by one, but he only had a minor stinging which he forgot the minute one of his mates called him a wuss.

DJ came paddling by and the other instructor introduced him as the "Guru of SUP" and an "International SUPerstar". He made the kids clap for DJ as he paddled by..............It was brilliant to say the least.

Yeah.. Nic does that to me all the time.. Yeah it's embarrassing.. and Nic knows it..

It was a perfect day for learning to SUP down at St Kilda today.

Here they come.

Jeez they didn't do stuff like this when I went to school.

There they go.

I paddled past my favorite boat.

You can see why..

Frances is great - she never tells me what to do, she just stands there and approves everything I do on my boat.
