There's so much to do while staying in Merimbula for the Mambo.. Here some pics from a few things that we did.
Baunda Island is about 10 minutes drive north of Merimbula and it's a beautiful spot.
You turn right off the main road to Tathra at the turn-off to Woodbine Park and at the T intersection turn right and follow it to the end.
There's a car park.. walking maps, toilets and a viewing platform that lets you look north towards Baunda Island.
There it is.
Yeah it's only small and hardly even an island.
It's a nice 20 minute walk through the tea trees along these walking trails.
At the end of the trail you come out just past the island.
This is looking north.
Looking north again but along the beach.
Looking back towards the island.
this is all that separates it from the mainland and you can walk across if you don't mind getting a little wet.
We walked back along the beach.
Another day we went on a whale watching trip.. The sign said see a whale or get your money back.. I thought yeah sure.. I've been coming to the Mambo 29yrs and rarely see a whale.
It's a nice big boat that takes about 50 people and cost about $60 for a 3 1/2 hr trip (8-11.30am).
Another great thing to do while in Merimbula is drive south for 15 minutes to Eden.. and in Eden is the Killer Whale Museum.
When Eden was a whaling town the killer whales would help the humans heard and catch the big whales.. They became good friends and they would sometimes save fishermen that had fallen overboard and if a fishing boat was in danger of getting smashed on the reef in a storm often a killer whale would come and grab a rope in its mouth and ow the fishing boat to safer waters.
When one of these whales died they kept its skeleton and it's now in the museum.. Check out the wear marks on its teeth from the rope.
There's lots of cool stuff to see there.. I hope I don't see one of these this close for real.
Take the time to read through this... Absolutely amazing.
We got taken up into the light house.
I could not believe that the light is from two little globes not much bigger than a hand held torch globe and this big lens magnifies the light.
So... If you're planning in going to the Mambo next year and think you'll just go for the four days.. maybe conceder at least a week so you can check the place out..
