i see in your profile you don't have any mention of sups. ok its sups paddling out in the ocean on big boards with preferably the wind behind you and the swell running with wind. the wind helps push you along so you can catch the ocean swells known as runners. 200m rides is not uncommon in good conditions, and when you can link those rides your in heaven. so when surf conditions are shot, that can be a good time to do downwinders. skis and oc's and other craft look for these conditions too, but we get to standup
cheers

Courtesy of the Doctor here in Perth we have near ideal conditions for down winders virtually every afternoon in the summer. There are a few of us who park a couple of cars at Cott and Scarbs-Trigg and paddle south-north with the wind and waves. Like you I used to surf and let me tell you the feeling of surfing an open ocean swell for 30,40,50 metres is something I never experienced short boarding.
