After a couple of months on the lake with no real issues balance wise today was my first day in the surf.
How hard can it be I asked myself?
I’ve been surfing for 45 years for gods sake.
This will be easy!!
Wrong!!
What a difference from the lake to the ocean.
I spent most of the time falling into the water just trying to paddle, never even looked like catching a wave …. Damm, this is harder than it looks!!
But you know what ….. I’m hooked and I will get it eventually.
Takes me back to when I was a kid.
Might have to hold off on the new Naish 10’ Mana though!
Sorry Sam
Cheers.

What board were you on? I think you'd find the Naish 10' Mana would keep you dry in the surf more than most boards.

good one. man, i 've surfed all my life, but practically all of it on 6'2 s, never even been on a mal. first time in the surf, a onshore day. i got smashed, 1 wave and was absolutely spent. next time i got a heap, just as spent. with in a month getting lots of waves. it was hard on the tricky days, still is on those wee low volumed boards. the best times of my surfing life.

you will be surprised how quickly it will come- enjoy
cheers

You just need to pick your days (weather/waves) and pick your breaks (point/beachies).. Pick it right and it's easy-peasy.. Pick it wrong and it's utter frustration not matter how good you are or what board you're on.. The 10' Mana should be a perfect starter board.

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback.
My current weapon of choice is an 11’6” Nalu.
I’m a big guy, 6’3” & about 115kg (before yesterdays lunch that is)
I’m used to long boards.
My mals range from 9’ to 10’2”
I still have shorties but they seem to come out less ‘n less these days.
I just couldn’t keep my balance, even in kiddie’s corner!
I have absolutely no problems on the lake.
What I did have was a heap of fun (I’m too old to worry what other people think!)
I guess I just need more practice.
Cheers.

FYI.. the 10' Mana is even more stable than the big 11'6" Nalu.. and surfs sooooo much better.. .. The huge 10'5" Mana might also be worth trying.

Agree with DJ, the Mana is really stable and there's no learning curve from the 11'6" - the only trade off is a little glide but you'll stay on the board more and catch waves for sure.

Hi DY,Mick here.I'm 47 and doin pretty much the same as you.My first day in the surf I ended up with half the pacific up my nose. After that I went to a sheltered bay afew times(no surf but still ocean motion)and did a few 2-3 hr paddle sesions around the bay.It only took a few weeks and the chops stopped bothering me as much. Now I'm trying to learn how to use the wind to my advantage.I just happen to have a 10'6"Naish Nalu and a few weeks ago I would have sworn it was the most unstable wobbly creature in the sea,but now I'm enjoying it more and more every surf....One word of warning though. When climbing back on board grab hold of the rail and not the deckgrip otherwise it peel off like mine did.Contact adhesive from any hardware shop will stick it back down.
Anyway good luck.

good stuff guys, i'm similar too, 39, 6 foot and 115 kegs and have surfed for about 25 years but i'm still in the lagoon on the big naish 11'6, i've not ventured out into any swell yet other than a couple of runs down the bribie passage with a little more slop than the lagoon. i'm loving it and actually have no intentions of getting a more surf orientated sup, the big nalu is the girl for me.

Here's some simple tips that helped me loads when I started that I have passed on to friends that have surfed for a long time and added SUP to the fun bank.

- Keep your head up and look at the horizon when you are in the ocean. Try to keep your shoulders horizontal also. Your board will wobble around on all of the different bumps and swells but if you keep your head is up you will stay on. I guarantee when you fall off if you think of this you will know you looked down. It's like the opposite to golf. This also helps when you are learning to catch waves. Line up the wave from further out, look at the beach and fang it. Once you're on the wave the 45 years of surfing will take over.

- Practice kick turns, left, right and sprinting off the mark from completing them in the flat and even just waiting out the back in the surf. They are your key to catching waves and getting back out.

- When you turn on the wave treat the paddle like you would your hand in the wave, when you bottom turn lean on the paddle not your hand, the other trick is pull your board around in turns after you have set the rail into the turn with the paddle by pulling it through the turn.

Once you have these basics sorted the rest is just surfing. Have fun.

Thanks for all the tips guys, good stuff and all helpful.
Blowing a southerly in Sydney this morning but I went for a paddle anyway.
Nothing like being a 50 year old grom!!
Less falling and more paddling today
Actually got up to Longy and back and ……………
Caught a wave!
Board actually surfs well
Cheers
