Would a longer paddle with a blade at each end work? You would then paddle alternate sides like a canoe or you could power stroke a few times just on the one side like we normally do.

Pros: No changing of hands all the time

Cons: 1. about 2/3 longer, but when surfing, the extra length would just be in front of you.
2. different grip when power stroking, but would that make a difference.
3. Difficult to kneel or in some surf situations

What do you think? Anyone seen this or tried it? Dumb idea?

I did not see this done but a guy called Jeff Sweeny did it at one of the 1st SUP demo days at Torquay with a double ended Tahitian paddle. This paddle was too short and he had to get on his knees and paddle into the waves Kayak style untill he got speed and then jumped to his feet apparently it was vey effective.

I have experimented with a home made double ended paddle that is one third longer than normal made from cedar. It has handle holes cut in both ends.

At this stage I have only played with it on the river but i my pinion it has merrit!

Patent pending lol

Dumb idea IMO.. ..real dumb.. I've seen vids of it being done and the paddle ends up being about 10' long and looks really stupid (imo).

I think the good thing about having to swap sides with the paddle is that tired muscles get a rest and you can paddle for longer because of this.

BTW.. The idea is not new.. This pic was from here in Oz about 50 yrs ago.. Maybe it was us that invented SUP and not the Hawaiins..

Being someone who did a bit of Kayaking on flat and white water in the past I don't think it is totally dumb...

However, with the length of the shaft required I doubt you will ever get to a high enough cadence with the paddle blades to be truly effective. There is simply too much time between stokes.

How about a 90 degree paddle instead of a long straight one?

The long straight one would take ages to bring the end that was up in the air down to the water for the opposite side. (as Aus301 pointed out)

If you had the equivalent of two normal SUP paddles with the handles joined at 90 degrees (or some other angle) you'd better than halve the time between strokes. You'd have a sliding grip change between sides, but still..

Yeah, it would look odd, and you'd probably want some way of taking it apart so it would fit in the car better, but then the same is true of SUP in general!

We took a friend paddling and he used a sailboard and an old, very long double ended paddle. He did fine with it.

I gave it a go. It gives great acceleration but overall it sucked.

Using it single ended it's way too long and unbalanced and your top hand feels all wrong.

Using it double ended you get very wet every time the blade swings up and water drips off. The hand position is all wrong for standing and getting a powerful stroke.

Somebody here was talking about making a paddle with the hand-grip extended into a webbed paddle shape so he could sit down and paddle out to save his tired old body. This would work ok and be a good thing for grovelling upwind or for resting during a downwinder. We currently do this with a normal paddle and it sort of works.

No DJ. You are dreaming. You will wake up soon and find out you're really a fat bastard that watches TV all day and SUP is a figment of your imagination.

How about as well as the double ended paddle, you sit down and put a seat belt on and put your feet in some stirrups....hang on thats been done before

Seriously though, isn't part of the appeal of SUP the nice feel you get from using a single paddle. Less paddle to get stuck in the waves, not awkward, etc.

this is a terrible admission, akin to "my name is Rupert and i'm an alcoholic" or "those charges were never proven in court" but yes I use a double ended paddle.Using the double ender came out of necessity because I could'nt stand up and use the single blade(I built my first board and didnt build in enough volume). So the only way I can use it is to kneel to paddle , then pop up and use the double ender as a standard SUP paddle(top hand on the top blade). It has some really good advantages-turning to catch a wave is quick and acceleration to get on the wave is fast.Plus chop and wind dont seem to be a big problem. To me it gets me all the best parts surfing(I must add I'm a seriously crap 50 year old surfer) and makes the dull parts much easier. anyhow glad i've got that of my chest

hmmm, interesting.

Seems like the only real problem, imo, would be the cadence issue: too long from side to side.

Looking stupid > not an issue, i already do
Getting wet > not an issue, i already do
Resting muscles by changing sides > well that would happen as you would be paddling alternate sides with a double paddle: shorter rest, but after only a single stroke
more paddle to get stuck in waves > not sure this would really prove to be an issue

Well done to you Ozzie lot for inventing sup with a double ended paddle, but it seems the credit for supping with the conventional blade still rests with the Hawaiians.

Pleased also that i have allowed logman to get some serious confessions off his chest.

Thanks for the comments.

Purgatory is paddling a double-ended paddle on a SUP ... sitting down ... in flat water ... with a fat chick on the front ... unless she's a really nice fat chick ... that would be ok.

It would be no good in the waves but if it ended up being more efficient than a single paddle then there would be nothing written in the rules to stop you using in a distance race!

I might look into it for the next SHQ Cerberus race. I need all the help I can get when it comes to distance paddling!!!!!!
