hey guys, looking for some advice for a mate.

My boards have no valves so couldn't really offer him any...

Story goes... travel for a surf trip, hot day, removed valve for the drive... the inevitable happened, forgot about putting it back in and had the board in the water for 20 minutes before realising..

does it cause any damage,
does it need to be dried out - how long for
will the be any long lasting effects?

cheers in advance

Yes he will need to dry the core. The styrene will need to dry out completely. It could rot out the foam if left

Not good This why set-and-forget breather valves are the go...

You have to get the water out and it is going to take time.
Get tissues or paper towels and roll them into a cone shaped wick. Stick the pointy end an end in the valve hole so it is in contact with the foam. Warming up the board moderately ( sunlight) helps to get the water moving. Gravity also helps initially for water trapped near the skin, but over time the foam sucks the water into the core and this is what takes time to get out. The paper wick, though slow works well if the air is warm, dry and moving outside around it as it wicks or sucks the moisture out.
Be patient, moisture left in the board breaks down the foam and causes delams down the track. Good luck!

A little more extreme method one that many are reluctant with I know: drill a hole in the ends of the board and use a fish tank pump to force water out or find a centrifigul wheel and spin the sucker dry.
Hope he has luck with whatever means he tries

Sorry to hear,
AA gives good advice, Its is a long shot and you may only be prolonging the agony of water rotting the core.
Its been my experience ,because the styrene is of granular construction made up of small cells water will wick and travel around the cells of styrene and is very hard to displace completely ,even with heat.
My humble advice would be - firstly get some professional advice, one good source would be , Kracka surf in Newcastle and see what they suggest, they have a good reputation for repairing a lot of surf club epoxy boards .(I have no connection with them apart from hearing good things especially with repairs, look them up on the net).
Secondly ,This is what I think,
This is drastic but my method would be to cut around the vent ,say 100 x 100mm sq to start , (may have to enlarge depending on affected area) remove and inspect core, extract and replace affected styrene ,replace styrene with higher density styrene than parent core density, sick down and sand to suit, replace the vent with a one way vent (set and forget) ,re epoxy and put it down to experience.
Its the only sure method of knowing that the board is 100% water tight and will last.
OR
Buy your mate some tissues watch Titanic and start saving for a new board.
haha only joking, best of luck

Please write back and let us know how you go ,for future reference.
cheers

ouch, cheers guys, I don't think he is a Titanic kinda guy, I am glad that I got rid of the board that I had with the vent in it. Would have not liked to be in the same situation.

Will pass on everyones advice and post back with what he does, cheers all

the set and forget vents have been known to clog up from time to time. I know some of the windsurfers here will not touch a board with it in.

still I would rather them than the vents most boards come with.
