Nero is limited, but is one of the easier and friendly applications to use for video editing. Adobe Premier is one of the best but harder to use.

If I had spare coin, that is the way I'd go, Imovie looks seamless and sony Vegas is a great add on for it also

I started with an Mac Mini for about $700.
Use existing monitor, keyboard,etc. then bought iPad and the kids have iPad mini's. saving for Mac Pro with retina display - now we're talking.

For PC, Sony Vegas has an easy to learn basic timeline editor and the Movie Studio Platinum V12 is under $100. www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/?utm_source=sonycreativesoftware&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=redirect&lang=us&prdt=vegassoftware

I edit with the Pro version but Movie Studio Platinum is very similar, Pro Version just has more powerful options but most people never use them. An added bonus is there are hundreds of Sony Vegas Tutorial videos on youtube.

You really need to select an editor to suit the main camera you are using as not all can handle the higher frame rates above 60fps. (GoPros now have 240fps)

@SUPmego
Windows Movie maker for sure.... so easy to use, built in transitions, effects etc.

@Dogman
You need to get yourself a little bit of Final Cut Pro going on with the set-up at your place, its almost a sin not to have it!
