SUP is popular because at the base level it is easy and fun.

You don't need good waves. You don't really need any waves for it to be fun.

For surfing it removes or reduces the two worst parts:

1. Prone paddling is hard to do and very tiring. Standing up and paddling is easy to do. Paddling a surfboard 500 metres to a break is almost unheard of, but for a SUP even 1-2km is a leisurely cruise.

2. Sitting and waiting forever for a wave can get very stale. Most surfing sessions are 80% sitting, 10% paddling about, 5% hassling for a wave, 5% surfing. With a SUP if you get bored you can go for a paddle up the coast.

It's excellent in good to great surf and there are boards to satisfy even the most demanding surfers.

It's not like wave skis that are slow and unstable. An allround SUP board is comfortable to stand on, fast enough to paddle for it to be fun, and good on a huge variety of surf conditions.

The things that will slow down the surge in popularity are:
- they're too ****ing big.
- they're too ****ing heavy
- they're a bit expensive
- they don't like wind (unless you're doing a downwinder)
- the waves may eventually get too crowded

Hey Chickenman,

Most of the growth around the world in SUP is actually on flat water excercising, rivers, lakes ponds etc.

Only a small % of the overall SUPers will actually surf. As many people fnd out a big board in the surf can and will kill you if you get it wrong.

Lots of people can stand on a SUP in glassy conditions, but throw in wind, chop, rips, water movement etc and trust me they thin out very very fast down our way.

The rougher it gets the better I like it, no crowd and the greater the challenge just to stand on the thing.

We paddle to breaks you will rarely get to on a shorty or mal and if you dont like it paddle another 1/2 k to the next one you like.

Wind comes up throw it in the river always a plan B

Woman who try SUP love it, you get the advantages of a full body work out, see some nature and your not stuck inside.

Lots of woman paddle down our way now the secret is getting out and ahh they are kinda easy on the eye too.

Oh and now Kids are all over it too, well mine are woooo hoooo but they already surfed a bit first.

For me its the uncrowded waves.
I grew up here and have surfed this area for 30 years. Im now SUPn waves I have only seen surfed 2-3 times in that period.
So much potential its scary. No crowds,no dickheads,So much fun.
The future looks great.

Ditto, worrier. I lived in your town for 3 years (95-97) & got lots of nice waves, but moving back to the crowds & small, inconsistent surf of Perth is so uninspiring that many's the time I've given surfing a miss & hit the golf course instead. I live 5 minutes from the golf club & 3 minutes from the beach, but the golf used to win every time the waves were small, crowded, choppy, cold..........& any other excuse I could think of!! Since taking up SUPing (November '07), I've cancelled the golf club membership, clubs have only left the shed 4 times in 18 months, & I'm out there SUPing as often as I can. Like OG Sup said, even just paddling is a buzz, whereas with prone surfing you only paddle 'cos you have to . Keeps you fitter than golf (or lawn bowls ), & one of the biggest buzzes is the camaraderie. Let's hope it stays that way!!

Paddle Surfing ROCKs!

I have been involved and taught a lot of sports in my time and nothing comes close to the smiles we get and the 'reward' customers get from Paddle Surfing. For an adrenaline junky its all about catching waves but when we teach at Balmoral on flat water, everyone (and I mean everyone) comes back smiling. You have to ask why that is?

I think we Aussie's have a love and unique afinity to the Ocean and many people see Surfing and the other ways of getting into the Ocean as just WAY too hard and something they can't do. They hit the water on a StandUP board and realise their dream can be realised straight away, just paddling around the coastline.

As also mentioned, at its most basic level it is easy and it is fun.
Paddle Surfing opens up the Ocean too everyone in an easy, non threatening way!

We are all in it for different reasons and its other beauty is that it can be enjoyed in so many different ways.

In a long search over many years I am yet to find anything that is this much fun, can be enjoyed by almost anyone and is so good for you both physically and mentally.

Yeah, I'm a tragic!

AA

PS: There is also The Breeze which has been showing its true colours over the last few weeks with CASSO's camera fund, girls finding others to paddle with and even the moderator getting hooked!

here here Andrew on girlies meeting up. Met up with BreezyC this lunchtime for a flat water paddle, and had a blast..... it's so much nicer too when there's more than just you on the water.

thanks to her i even got my pivot turns going, and some board walking too, which i hadn't tried for a while .... getting myself ready to try some waves hopefully soon

but to answer chickenman's post, for me the buzz is just being able to get in the water and paddle around, knowing that i'm getting a workout out of it + seeing some wildlife (not that i'm a closet animal/fish lover of course). and yes, my little boy loves going on the board, and he's only 3.5yrs old!

ahh, the future looks SUPeachy

Before I rode SUP's I used to live on the streets.

Sleeping in bus shelters, empty houses, old sheds.
No girl friend, ragged clothes, and only ate when I could find some sort of itinerant work or because some kind soul took pity on me.

My only friends were my dog and the kindness of strangers.

Now that I ride SUP'S I have two houses.

I sleep in a massive cushy bed and wear the latest flash surf wear.
I dine in various exclusive restaurants and take my dog along with me cause I can.

Whenever I come back to shore there is always someone there waiting to make love to me.

SUP's work for me

haha, right Gorgo!! Yes, it's a living death, golf, & I'm glad that I'm now addicted to paddle-surfing. Golf is the most frustrating sport on earth requiring an enormous amount of skill. It's a love-hate (mainly hate) relationship for millions of people, & some of them make fabulous amounts of money. Contrary to popular belief, you have to be super-fit to play top level golf, & most golf athletes would put all those pot-bellied mal-riders to shame. Ask Tiger Woods about his fitness regime. If you think that surfing is "WAY" harder than golf, you've obviously never played golf (not above hacker level anyway). Check out this vid, it's hilarious:

p.s. love your response too, Elbeau!

Thank you Molly.
I have had years of heartbreak with my golf. Your video possibly holds the key to alleviating the frustration I have experienced.
I just have to write it down.
Thanks again
