Tried to get out the Alley this afternoon and for the first time ever couldn't get out and no it wasn't very big. That's a long, embarrassing walk from the Palms to do 3 times. On the up side I got a great workout (paddling on my guts most of the time) and I have a fridge full of coronas

if its any consolation the alley was terrible this morning. east swell mixed with a a south ground swell and bumpy as. every one was falling off their boards. waves hard to catch and well they were just falling over anyway.

i managed to get a good one through to the inside then copped a flogging.

i turned around and went in. it just wasn't worth battling back out

This afternoon was relentless and with no gap in the bank there just wasn't much of a gap. The onshore probably wasn't helping either. Almost got out on my last attempt only to get dragged back onto the bank by a rogue set. Paddled out on my last attempt with 3 other blokes who all managed to scramble out down near the palms but by that stage I had nothing left. It looked ****house anyway. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it

Have been having similar battles lately. Short period swell, tide pushing in, end up way down past the towers before I get out.

Has anyone tried putting a loop on their leg rope and hooking the paddle to it so you can prone paddle and roll the white water and hang on to the board, or pop over the white water like on clubbie boards … or would it cause too much drag?

Best news I have heard today... checked it earlier and decided to spend the day with the family building brownie points. Sounds like it was the right option.

I was there with you as well , Ross scrathced out in front of you , both yourself and Brett were getting smashed so headed with the sweep towards Lacey's and found a break in the line there , as I paddled over the sets I looked over my shoulder and they seemed to change direction and head straight towards you. Next thing I see is your board tomb stoning.......... so unlucky as you were out... That's why I use use short thick leggies stops your board from tomb stoning , plus it's a quicker recovery.

We all get that feeling sometime. In fsct, I had my first major boating f#ck up ladt night and that is exactly how I am feeling right now. Plus totally too down to even think of going for a paddle.

Wow I must have been one bad MF in a past life. No matter how hard I try things always seem to turn to crap.

Maybe if I had a fridge full of Coronas I wouldn't be feeling so down?

I recon if ya got some contact cement and some velcro and stuck the velcro to the deck of ya board in a way that ya could secure ya paddle quickly and rather tightly ya might have a chance at the old eskimo roll.I've been thinking about this for a while now but am waiting to get a new board first then I'll try it on my old one.

I roll the board with the paddle in my hand , if your nose rails aren't too thick you still get a good grip on the board. You want the paddle in your hand to put the brakes on to stop drag backs. You can strap the handle end of your paddle with your leggie ankle strap , I do that when I have to swim in with a snapped leggie.

C4 Waterman are on it, they make board shorts with a paddle loop and u just hook the knuckle in in and it just hangs off your leg, they come in 2 types and the pohakus are stretchy but only grey, and the others are the Maka Ihe they come in red, blue, green, navy. here's the link

the alley at the moment has banks all the way down to the twin towers with no let ups. throw in a short period easterly swell, well you can be unlucky

Yeah the inside bank at the Alley all the way through to Lacey's can be a real Bitch to break the line , it's a waterfall coming off the sand. At least with the big swell period you might get the gap that's where you have to paddle your guts out.

I saw you paddling wide and thought how the f*** did he get out there haha? I thought I was out too but just got clipped by that set and pushed back onto the bank. Then it was straight handers all the way along palmy. I think everyone up in the palms would have heard the abuse coming out of my mouth. What a prick of a bank to get over with a bit of almost north in the swell! The leggy I was using is an O&E 7fter that's real chunky. Maybe I should try the roll like you say instead of punching over/through them. I wonder if a clubbie handle up near the nose would be worth a try?

Surfed it yesterday on my SUP with my surfing class at 1.30pm and the groms were charging.

The swell didn't kick in till about 12/12.30pm and then got bigger as the arvo went on.

Some of the bigger sets were 4 ft with plenty of lulls between sets.Great wave with plenty of wall to work along especially down through Lacey's.

Just got to flick off before it closes down on the bank which will spank you hard if you get shut down on.

Looked at it this morning and it is pretty similar size to yesterday, so it should be good for the titles this weekend.
