I finally got around to getting the mag and watching the vid lat night.
Water and Oil is pretty good. It gets very samey with aerial 360 after aerial 360 after aerial 360 and close out barrel after close out barrel after ... The 8mm film effect looks pretty good and is also repeated ... lots.
Still, it has some fairly nice music and has a little bit of old school soul about it so it's a nice watch and not particularly offensive.
The extras has a nice Quiksilver advertising feature with a heap of ultra slow motion surfing shots.
It looks fantastic. Very Matrix-like slow motion lips and boards landing frmo aerials. Some classical music on some of the scenes is a nice change. Yet again way too much repetition. I guess they had to get their money's worth out of the high speed camera hire.
The rest of the extras are Backstage with Hoy. Lots of behind the scenes snippets from a competition and stuff. Moderately entertaining to watch.
One of the snippets was for the Quiksilver women's photo shoot. Apparently the weather was crap and the photographer said the light made for more sexy shots. My other half expressed dismay the woman surfers had to be sexy. It was later said they were models so shoe found that a little less offensive.
I have to say I agree with her. I'm all for pictures of hot chicks but surely Quiksilver could promote woman surfers based on their surfing ability.
I'm also wondering if there's some reverse discrimination there. Guys have to look cool AND be great surfers to get photographed. Woman just have to be hot chicks. No surfing skill required.
