The other day when we did our Penguin tour I noticed that the tour leader tried to carry a water bottle while paddling.. He had it sitting on the board between his feet but because of the wide stance it would roll from side to side..and sure enough it fell in.

I've heard of guys mounting water bottle holders on their down-wind boards in Hawaii and I know that Scotty has mounted one on his new Naish Glide by using the mast base screw hole.

Yesterday I set out to find a nice shaped water bottle holder that would be safe to use and not be sharp or have chance of catching a toe in it.

I bought this one for $25.

I then went to my local boating shop and bought a couple of 8mm x 25mm s/s bolts (one flat head and one countersunk head)

I'm not sure which bolt type I will use and I will have to drill the bottle cage for the larger bolt to fit.. (not done that yet) ..and it should work out ok.

This will not work for surfing but on flat water your feet don't move much and sometimes I don't like to wear my camelbak.

I'll let you know how it goes.. It should only take a few seconds to put on and take off.

A company called Ultimate Directions (ultimatedirection.com/) makes all sorts of technical bumbag style packs including waist belt bottle holders.

These may be an option for those who don't have the facilities on the top of a board to mount a bottle cage, would rather something around the waist or would like some extra carry capacity.

Here's some pics of how it turned out.

I haven't paddled with it yet and it will be interesting to see if I step on it, kick it or hit it with the paddle.

Does it get in the way when carrying the board on your shoulder or putting it on the roof racks?

I see you also wear Crocs thongs.

Yes it would get in the way.

I would only use it on the odd occasion like this Monday's Australia day Yarra River paddle and I would fit it just prior to putting the board in the water.

It only takes a few seconds to fit and remove.

btw.. Those Croc thongs are great..

A camelback no good Dave?

Camel backs are also great for smuggling in the good stuff to the Big Day Out if anyone is going!
