Hey all,

I trimmed and glued the handle into my new paddle, but it appears i did not glue it fully watertight. Water is getting, but not out.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? Can the araldite glue be undone somehow?

Thanks!

Carefully! I used a heat gun but over did it, deforming the ABS handle while twisting it out. Epoxy does not bond well with ABS, not sure about Araldite.

So hit it with hot air, the glue should melt?
Then, will it reset, or will I need to let it dry then sand it back and reglue fresh?

And, in the original post, I ment to say the water is getting in and not coming out. But I figure you worked that one out...

Hair Dryer works. My paddle was a bit long so I used a hair dryer to loosen the handle, trimed the shaft and re-glued using 5minute aredlite. When using the dryer take your time not to over heat the shaft and you should be fine.

Yeah soften the glue with heat and twist it out . You need to sand all the old glue off and apply fresh glue to both surfaces (shaft and handle ). Wipe off the excess while it's wet. Apply some electrical tape around the join while it's still wet this will help seal it up.

I had that problem, when I first cut the shaft on my new paddle, i think I got half a paddle full of water.

Couldnt wait for the hair dryer...........so i blasted it with the heat gun on hot.......got the handle out in no time at all......

Tipped a lot of water out, shoved the still hot handle in and bobs your uncle............

i have a KE NALU paddle

Dont try this with yours.......and if you do damage the paddle buy a ke nalu, its idiot proof.......I should know

Best of luck

Insulation tape on joins works a treat

Hi guys,

I drilled a tiny 1mm hole in the shaft just up under the handle, then drilled another 1mm hole opposite.

I slightly tilted the paddle to make the handle just lower than the blade and blew in the top hole which allowed the water to squirt out of the bottom hole. When empty, I just wrapped a piece of insulation tape around the two holes as well as around the base of the paddle where the blade meets the shaft and where the handle meets the shaft.

If I ever get water in again, I can fix it in an instant. If you drill the holes carefully, it should have no adverse effect on strength. Easy fix and takes 5 minutes. No cost either as I already had the tiny drill. I wouldn't use any drill bigger than 1mm.

Heat it up and it will twist out .... I held mine in a pot of boiling hot water for a few minutes. Careful, it will obviously be hot when you pull it out of the water. Use a cloth to grip it. When you reglue it make sure you run a line of araldite all around the join to waterproof it.
