2 x Sandwich bags (just in case) and are dirt cheap or as I saw today, just use a waterproof phone case which can be strapped to you or chuck it in your pocket.

I've been stashing my key on my car somewhere for nearly 20 years and it's never gone walkabouts

Hi Supsoulrider, I just posted a review of two Paqua waterproof cases over at my site, you can read it here:
http://www.thesupingcaveman.com/blog/sup-review-paqua-mobile-and-midi-cases1/10/2014

The cases are excellent and they do have a slightly smaller one that are designed especially to put a key in. I used the Midi the most and I could get the key in there easily as well as some money for coffees. they float well also.

Just had a look they seem a little big
Would really want something small that I can hang round my neck.( see the problem I have with my car key its an intelligent key so I need to have it with me at all times because I can't lock the car without it or start the car so it's a bit of a problem!!

There is a smaller version of the Paqua that is just big enough for an electronic key - fits in the pocket of my boardies.

Also, if you have keyless entry for your car, the metal box/padlock style thingy works (see picture further up the thread) - when you put your key inside it and lock it to the underside of your car, the signal is not strong enough for the keyless entry to work. Well, that is what I have found with my car anyway

So the padlock protects the key and the signal can't get throught to open the car ?
What's the size of the padlock and where can you buy one from . Do they say on the packaging that the signal will not get throught when locked?

Not sure if it said that on the packaging as I didn't think of that when I bought it, but when I tried it, it worked. I think I bought it at Surf FX on the Gold Coast - depending on where you are located, if you can park outside a surf shop, they may let you test it before you buy it? I have seen them in a few surf/paddle shops.

This is the one I bought:

+1 Put the key in the pocket in the legrope (Along with my wedding ring if I forget to take it of again.... expensive mistake in many ways)

There's a company called Overboard does a big range of waterproof bags and pouches based on the Gold Coast. Google them.
