Just got a shiny new gopro, just wondering if anybody takes any additional measures to waterproof the housing?
I am thinking about just a smear of silicone grease around the seal, anybody else doing it or think it is necessary?

Thanks,
Scott.

IMO you might do more harm than good.. I would not do anything.. Just use it.. I've never heard of one leaking.

Cheers mate, just a little wary after having another waterproof camera leak. Also on mine, there is a gap between the housing and the door, obviously with the seal between them, I just expected it to close with less tolerance.

I wonder if that little gap between the housing and the door is where the little string goes around the steel pin?

I've also had other camera's leak but never ever heard of a GoPro leaking.. It would be a warrantee if it did.

The clearance between the door and the housing is designed into the system, when underwater diving the water pressure exerts more force on the door thus placing more pressure on the seal, if the clearance wasn't there the door and housing would bind and no further pressure on the seal could be exerted.

Also as the gap closes, the locking clip also becomes looser the deeper you go, so some divers use an elastic band to prevent the clip from accidentally opening.

GoPro recommend you Don't use lube on the seals, just keep it clean.

DJ the gap Scott is referring to is the clearance around the entire door and housing, the small cut a way over the hinge is indeed for attaching a leash ( fish line)

Lost GoPros have been found 6 mths after on the bottom of the ocean still perfectly sealed and work when a charged battery is inserted.

Just as an add.. Your more likely to have issues with the button seals, so wash them thoroughly after each use, punch them several times while rinsing.

Spot on mate, that's the gap I was concerned about.

Thanks for the good info guys, hadn't even considered the pressures at depths and the effect on the housing.

Cheers,
Scott.

There have been reports of GPH3 housing failures.
At least GoPro replace the whole set up when it happens.

The housing on a GoPro is very good quality. Very few brands have been rated to 60m. They don't need additional waterproofing.
