Yesterday down at St Kilda there was this weird orange blob in the water.. It was a very bright orange.. almost fluro.. The pics don't show the real colour.

I positioned my board way down the other end of the beach for fear of ending up with an orange board.. but the blob soon moved down to where my board was and stayed there.

Someone said that they thought it was some type of algae.. Does anyone know what it is?

I think it might be caused by an abundance of pigmented dinoflagellates, commonly known as a 'red-tide'.
A friend from work has seen something similar to this in Tassie which caused the oyster farms to shut down.
Dinoflagellates, also be referred to as phytoplankton or planktonic algae, are single celled organisms (so very small and not necessarily distinguishable to the naked eye) which undergo photosynthesis and their photosynthetic pigments is what tints the water.
