Yep, the thing I didn't like was the thickness of the shaft. But I guess that's the trade off with having it adjustable.

I have tried the Werner adjustable and also found it stiff and very heavy.

The quality of the werner was fantastic but $600 was a bit steep!

I also tried the Kialoa Adjustable and found it had more flex and felt better but was $400 and still quite heavy! about the same as the crowbar (Southpoint)

The aluminium adjustable paddles imho are better solution and less than 1/3 the price. The Bic Jungle one is quite good quality and reasonably light for its construction and only costs $200 It is also light enough for my 10yr old daughter to use without any issues.

My 2 cents

Phil any paddle will feel heavy after using a Kialoa Methane..

I really like the adjustable Kialoa and even though the alloy shaft is a little heavier than the non adjustable carbon shaft the thing that I like the most is the feel.. The flex.. The size of the shaft at the lower hand and the size of the shaft near the T grip..and also the shape of the T grip makes it feel very much like the carbon Kialoa.. Also the blade is very light so the swing weight is reduced heaps.. Unlike the alloy Naish that felt like you were swinging an anvil on the end of the shaft.

I'll bring mine down to OG on the 13th if anyone wants to try it.

I went paddling with my son today and used my old aloy naish paddle - the one that came with the board - couldn't believe how heavy it was. Whenever I jump on the naish 11'6" and use that alloy paddle it makes me think just how quickly this sport/recreation has evolved.

I think I'll go a methane as my next surf paddle - for me it's a weight thing and I do like the thin shaft and the flex it gives you. I don't really see myself adjusting the length of my paddle as it will just be me using it.

Oliver,

I have a new challenge for you mate! I want you to prone surf the 7.2 x 29 you will have a ball I did.

Its a short board for bigger Kahona's you will love it!

Phill.

DJ love to see your paddle on the 13th and I will bring the bic for you to try.

i have a kialoa paddle that goes well with my gerry 8 10. plenty of flex/power, rapid stroke rate when needed and a real featherweight. swapped with a friend who had a gsi.i had to ask for mine back, i just could not get a wave.i thinking maybe on shorter sups you need a top level paddle!

i use the jungle adjustable paddle in my school

at the moment they are holding up well

and they cop it from the high school sport crew as i'm always catching them using them to hit rocks and each other

More long and skinny paddles with a soft edge and the partial dip technique for acceleration:

I'd like to go shorter just for the balance thing - it's great getting used to a more unstable board, cause when you go back to the bigger board it feels so luxurious. My only concern about going shorter is losing glide. Having some glide is a beautiful thing.

BTW gorgo.... nice looking paddles in that link - I like the idea of partial dip for greater acceleration. Haven't thought of that before but it makes sense!

Me neither but I'll give it a try. That Werner video is the second time I've seen it mentioned.

It might be too fiddley to try and dip only half the blade when starting to chase a wave but it can't hurt to try it out.

Half dipping is the only way that you can paddle a bigger blade paddle fast.. (high cadance).

Half dipping is also great when doing sink-tail turns because you don't tend to pull yourself off-balance.

I also do it when going over a steep boat wake when most of my effort is going into balancing and not falling.

i would have to question if you are paddling hard for a wave would you really be thinking oh better make sure i'm half dipping. wouldn't be better to just have a smaller paddle for surfing

For sure.. That's why the small Methane is so good... But if you only have one paddle and it's the older large blade type half dipping is an option..

Yes ... and no.

Part of me loves having the right gear and the more toys the better.

The other part loves the ease and simplicity of SUP and the fact that I can go somewhere and know that my gear is going to work just fine no matter what the conditions are.

One of the more frustrating things in SUP surfing is paddling away like a mad thing and feeling like you're not moving as the wave bears down. If I can improve the feeling of SUP by a acquiring a new technique then that is a good thing.

BTW. Anyone want to buy a 9'6" surftech longboard? I want to move it on so I can buy more toys.
