I've spent all my life sailing on the bay, but never have I seen a whale in Port Philip.
Until this morning.
'Bout 9.30 off Sandringham yc. Absolute glassy conditions, and followed a small humpback all the way back to Black Rock. Just me and another kayak paddler for most of the way, then Cal joined in.
Then of course the predictable idiot fishos in a power boat, but even that didn't disturb him. Whales are obviously more tolerant of idiots in power boats than me.
Incredible show - rolling, waving fins, flapping tails, the whole tourist bit for half an hour.
Apparently there were a whole stack of landlubbers on shore watching as well, but they didn't get the view we had...
Only wish I had dragged my daughter from her silly IPad to see it.
So watch out tomorrow on your downwinder DJ. Who knows, you might get lucky too.

Spent 2 of the last 3 local sessions paddling with whales breaching near us within 100m (the 3rd we had tuna busting up the surface off the back breakers). Amazing creatures!
