This is a great time of year up on the East Coast. The whales are wrapping up their migration to the Antarctic and we get lots of Northerlies. Here is a clip from a few days ago.

Unfortunately the movie quality pretty bad. Tip: When using a GoPro turn Protune OFF, unless you know how to use an editing package, like GoPro Studio. This video has Protune turned ON and has not been edited.

Cool vid - thanks.
Gotta be careful with the whales though - I've been getting out with a few lately and learning their ways. The first time though, I misjudged and ended up paddling straight over the top of one and I had it right under me - like about a foot under the board - thought I was going to dry dock on the thing! I haven't so thoroughly crapped myself ever.

That's why I always tap my board - like in the video. This is to let them know that I am there and do not surprise them. It is amazing how this simple action changes their behaviour around you. They usually become really careful and often stop breaching/flapping when they get closer. They are really intelligent and deserve our protection.

Judging by the size of their grey matter id say yep they are pretty smart. Probably much smarter than us.

Ahhh right, didn't even notice that the first time I watched it. I figure they must know you're there anyway. The day I nearly did the dry dock, I knew I was too close at the last minute, and then a gust of wind actually ran me right over the top. I would've felt really bad if I hit it - so I try to get side wind to them now too.

BTW have you ever seen any big noah's with them? I thought I saw a big fin the other day, and it got all spooky and didn't see it again
