That's why I always tap my board - like in the video. This is to let them know that I am there and do not surprise them. It is amazing how this simple action changes their behaviour around you. They usually become really careful and often stop breaching/flapping when they get closer. They are really intelligent and deserve our protection.
Ahhh right, didn't even notice that the first time I watched it. I figure they must know you're there anyway. The day I nearly did the dry dock, I knew I was too close at the last minute, and then a gust of wind actually ran me right over the top. I would've felt really bad if I hit it - so I try to get side wind to them now too.
BTW have you ever seen any big noah's with them? I thought I saw a big fin the other day, and it got all spooky and didn't see it again
