This is a photo of a good friend of mine competing in the recent La Jolla race in California. She won the SUP marathon in the morning then went and won the OC1 marathon in the afternoon. She's very tall, about 6'3" tall and extremely strong. Apparantly this is her 3rd or 4th time on a SUB.

Can anyone tell me what type of board this is? Looks fast? Is it a Starboard ?

It is a Starboard.. It's the Starboard Point (or point to point).. Something like that.. I think they're about 14'8" long.

I've never seen one in real life but they look fast.

Bill bought one but found his old standard 12'6" was faster and after heaps of decision it seems that it's slower because he's a bit too heavy for it.

Great pic..and great looking girl..

It's shaped by Mark Raaphorst from SIC on Maui who shaped the F16 and F17. Really nice, fast board but a little bit in no man's with open class boards growing to 16ft plus and the 14ft class being for 14 footers.

I'll have mine at the Mambo if you want to take it for a bit of spin DJ.

Sam.

Thanks for your replies guys. So is it classified as Open/Unlimited ? Does it have a steering system ? I can't seem to see one in this pic.

http://www.star-board-sup.com/2008/products/sup148.php

from the website :

""14'8" x 27.5" The Point

Starboard continues leading the SUP revolution and now unviels The Point, a brand new shape and technology challenging current SUP design philososhies.

The Starboard 14'8" "the Point" designed by by Mark Raaphorst and Svein Rasmussen in by far the fastest SUP board in the Starboard range. It has been GPS tested to reach up to 12.34 km/h on flat water without wind.

The state of the art scooped out deck which feeds into a double concave deck massively increases the balance at the same time as it makes the board more rigid for extra speed.
The sleek 14'8" has enough nose rocker to work very well even in large ocean swell, one just need to step further back once up surfing.

The construction is the lightest ever successfully being applied to any surf, SUP or windsurf board. The 14kg/m3 light density EPS foam is laminated with 160 grams Carbon epoxy matrix covered by a 0.6 mm thin layer of unidirectional Australian pine wood. There is extra reinforcement in the standing area.

We believe that a whole new exciting dimension of SUP will be created through dedicated "point to point" board development. Down wind races are popular in Hawaii now, and the first competitions are starting in Europe this year.

The optional sterring system allows one to paddle effortlessly with side wind and eliminates paddle strokes for direction correction. The sleek system is well integrated into the board design and can be used with a little touch with the toes.

The power points for the fastest board from point to point:
Scooped out hull for extra balance
Extra length for maximal glide
Sleek nose rocker for open ocean suitability
EVA wedge on the nose to wash water off the deck
Extra superlight state of the art full wood/carbon construction
Optional steering system to increase paddle efficiency ""

John Hibbard has been winning a lot of races in the UK on the Point. Bill was disappointed in his but as DJ mentioned he thinks its because he's too heavy for it. I may consider getting one myself next spring if I can get myself down to 225-230.

One correction DJ...it was Bill's 12-2 that he found faster not his 12-6. The 12-6 is fast for it's length and width (30") but the 12-2 is only 27" and even faster. That's the board Bill used in the BOP. Bill did a bit of GPS time trials to figure out what he wanted to use. Did pretty well for an old geezer too...

Is Bill's 12-2 a Starboard also Bob? I was just reading about John Hibbards results on the Starboard web site before your post. I've sent him a message asking about this board.

FWIW:

I have ridden the 14'8 , 12'6 and 12'2

The 14,8 was close in speed to the 12'6 in flat water in a head to head paddle with john "The rock" Hibbard - he was slightly faster than me in glassy water - no chop - no matter which board we were each on.

But in a following sea the 14'8 would kill it as it picks up runs and keeps running for much longer. Also the steering system lets you concentrate on getting the power down without having to swap sides with the paddle - the steering system worked well for me.

the 12'2 is a super fast board for its size but can a handful to balance on in the surf (no problems in flat water) if you are 75 kg or more - due to its narrowness.
