Haven't heard anything about these guys for quite a while and when they came about they were claiming to be the "Peak body of SUP in Australia". There was also a lot of talk about whether these guys or Surfing Australia should be the governing/peak body, has SA established itself as this body? Also now have to consider AUSup who work with SA.

I Know ASI is bigger than these guys but where does it put all the people they put through instructors courses if there is no organisation to look after it.

They seem to have disappeared Cam. We did a race in Melbourne last year where we were required to join SUP Australia. It made it a rather expensive exercise as the membership gave us race insurance but we still had to pay an entry fee. It was the only race that had anything to do with SUP Australia all year.

For insurance purposes we aligned our downwind series here in Sydney with Paddle NSW which was approx another $100. Then for our State Titles the surfers needed to join Surfing NSW. That's 3 memberships for the year alone.

As we move forward with the Sydney Paddle Surfing Club, we're currently looking at the benefits of being affiliated with these individual bodies. They need to benefit both the racing and surfing side of SUP. No doubt our discussions with SUPSA in Qld , SUP VIC and the other state bodies will hopefully point us toward one particular group.

Who have the WA guys aligned themselves with or does it depend on the race organisers at this stage?

SUP WA has aligned itself with Surfing WA and is working closely with Canoeing WA for many of the flat water events as it is an easy add on as most of the infrastructure for events is already there. On top of that SUP WA run many events off their own back.

one thing you need to do is find out what your insurance actually covers because dean and myself were left out to dry by surfing qld's insurance who promised all sorts of coverage anywhere any time.

things like general membership coverage but has age discrimination causes tucked away which for surfing and sup clubs is ridiculous considering both have substantial middle age/older members

not supplying coverage documentation/disclosure statements to members then stating in their 'extented' policy documentation they send you out along with your no claim notice saying you should have read it that even our club board didn't have a copy of etc etc

just generally taking the money and then doing everything possible to not pay .

so really check it out by some one who knows the game

cheers

We can't see how they can claim to be the "Peak body of SUP in Australia" surely these clowns must know that we hold that title if they had their finger on the pulse

Thanks Cam. It looks similar to the direction we might go in NSW. Paddle NSW is the canoe body here.
Lacey's point is a good one and the insurance issue is something we've been trying to look at. As Lacey said many of the paddlers are 40+.

Surfing Australia have certainly taken over the Nationals. They just need to be a little more receptive to the needs of the paddlers. They could take a leaf out of Surfing NSW's book as they have been really good at listening to us.

Worth noting Surfing Queensland's insurance product is not the same as the one offered around the rest of the states at the moment.
