Say .. ummm .. a friend of mine had a carbon paddle on loan, and this friend took it out into a beach break, and through no fault of his own (it was the ocean, not him ), it snapped in two.

So .. my friend put a bit of 28mm pine dowel in the middle and glued it all together only to find that 28mm pine dowel is a bit weak, and it snapped again.

Have you broke a paddle, and if so, have you been able to resurrect it to full strength?

DJ is right it will never be the same , i have had a patched up paddle for about a year now , i repaired it by sticking a smaller piece of carbon shaft between the snap and i then glassed over the top.It will never break again but it is pretty ugly and very heavy.But beats forking out $300 for a new one.

the problem with using dissimlar materials is they have different expansion and contraction rates plus different tensile strengths....

but saying that timber and carbon could be used, a piece of hickory or north american ash would be better, they have long fibres...

carbon tubing would be good internaly with glassing over...

i would do 2 or 3 thin layers of glass,each longer than the last, say 150mm 350mm and 500mm..each layer feathered out when dry, so as not to cause a stress riser...should be very strong, wont break in the same spot....

im currently fixing some 'lako 's that snaped in half in big surf....using similar technique
