G’day all,
The last thread I posted was about learning the art of SUP surfing.
With the help from a few of you guys and the local surfers around here, I’m starting to get the hang of it.
I’m the first to acknowledge that I’ve got a long way to go, but I would like to know what to look out for in a shorter board for waves.
I actually T- Boned a guy on a goat boat Sat morning because I couldn’t turn it quicker enough to get out of his way. In the end, I reckon it was due to my skill level and nothing to do with the board, but I guess a shorter board would be more manoeuvrable.

I’m very happy with my Starboard 12’6”. Even though it’s a hand full in bigger waves, I will be keeping it for those smaller days

Is there a beast out there that is shorter but still has the width and similar volume of the 12’ 6” starie?
I’m an old fart, so I’m not after a super quick turning board, I’m hoping for user friendly type of board.

Also any feed back on the Starie Blend would also be appreciated?

Ian

check out the Starboard 9'8 - still 30 wide and has a very high rating by its owners - becoming a bit of legend is this model.

Its a fish shape that is nearly as stable as the 12'6 but doesnt have the glide or directional stability that your used too - get it into a nice wave and you will discover surfing nirvana.

much easier to reo - floater etc without the penalty of wobble that 28 - 26 inch boards deliver.

yeahthe sb 9'8 fish might be the go for you...it's very stable just like the rest of the SB's at 30"....but easier to turn and manage in the surf....it's probably got about 50l or so less vol...but unless your well over 100kg's - all your going to notice is that the sweet spot is smaller and mabye a bit of H20 splashin over your feet.

if u get one make sure u pop the fcs thrusters in at first.

Just to throw another spanner in the works there is also the 11'2 which I have.
Longboard style but dont expect to do any hardcore reos or fast grinding cutbacks.
Saying that if you do find the sweet spot it can be quite surfy on the wave.
It has the glide for flat water and also the rails, lines and tail of a surfboard.
Good for waves up to head high I reckon. Any bigger or suckier and the nose just wants to bog down on the take off. You have to really step back on the tail and cut through the face of the wave. It also has the ability to pick up the tiniest of tiniest waves.
The 11'2 for me has soul
