Hi Me again
Is it just me or is the vibe up north about SUP a little on the nose.
I have been surfing a SUP in victoria now for 2 years and have not encountered very much agro at all, to be honest none to speak of.
I surf mainly with Mal rides and every now and then with a few shorties on a small day when the conditions are great. Everyone has an opinoin but some of you don't sound too happy. I am well received in the line up and sit and chat with the crew between sets, I call the crew in when a bomb comes along and love the way they ride shorties as for me those days are gone.
I am a little put off with posting at times for fear of being grilled and I can't help but think that for some it's just not what you thought SUP would be. Is it just me, I hope not. Bring back that loving feeling.

you know i reckon half of it is in the body language or the vibe you put out.if your relaxed, having a good time , hooting waves, calling waves for the prones if their happy with that and you look like you know what your doing, chances are there will be no issues.

however there is always a few with a chip on their shoulder, lb ers, sb ers, and sup pers.

point 2 if you have had a few crackers, check out before you wear out your welcome. taking wave after wave for hours certainly is not going to help with the love
cheers

I could not agree more.
I guess I forget and no doubt not everyone that rides a SUP hangs out at some time or another in this forum.

Its a QLD thing, we dont have the numbers in Vic that they have on the Goldie and the Sunny Coast. Enjoy the peace whilst we can :-)

Don't do this. Besides being extremely patronising, water sense is one of the main things that separates a good surfer from a bad surfer. It's secret squirrel stuff. The whole time I'm constantly scanning all the cues, I'm pretending not to. Some moron calling waves for others just gives the clueless sheep a little bit of an advantage, the experts don't need it. Quite often I can get a bunch of waves in the middle of a pack on a crowded day through awareness that others lack. I don't need the sheep to get heightened awareness through 3rd party help. I'm not the only one like this - I can very quickly pick who knows what's up at a break. It's like a chess game.

If you're surfing with a bunch of kooks, feel free. They'll probably appreciate the help.

Right there is the crux of any dissension in the lineup.
Helping out ya mates(you know ,other people trying to enjoy the thrills of a great sport)makes the day just that much better.
Share the stoke stop being a wave hog and smile a whol;e lot more.

I don't see it as patronising more friendly and social behaviour really. if you want to hog all the waves you go for it. I'm sure you'll feel loved out on the water.
we are lucky though here in vic, reef breaks everywhere, dispersing the crowds.
gotta feel sorry for queensland surfers really.

Legion,
Thanks for your thoughts.
I will do as I see fit in the surf and as long as there are more smiles than not, it will continue.
I would rather surf and help out with a few clueless sheep and maybe give a few tips that will make them better at what they are doing than spend one minute in the water with a semi pro like yourself.
You clearly have lost that loving feeling.

Total f#@kwit more likely.

Sydney gets packed as well but as I said on the other topic you gotta pick the time and place and just be respectful of other people - no matter what you're on.

That said if you paddle out at North Narra or Snapper I would expect trouble no matter what

In WA there has been a bit of stink eye around, but nothing to get too upset about. Depends on where you are surfing and the crew that you are surfing with.

As for calling waves, it usually is only if I have spotted something coming and the guy nearby looks like he needs all the chances he can get to get out of the way. Did it a couple of times down at Yallingup and was thanked afterwards when the cleanup set went through. As for the rest, well they know what they are doing.

I just think as this is a forum, if legion wants to have an opinion he can have one, the name calling is a bit sub par as well. Legion has never called anyone a name or called anyone out, all he has done is submitted an opinion. If you dont like it come over to SBs and comment there if you like. I, for one would welcome it.

While I was in QLD I surfed Snapper once, all I can say is that I hope it never gets that crowded here. TBH Legion would not paddle out at Snapper and I wouldnt do it again myself if the crowds were like that again.

You clearly have lost that loving feeling.

Surfing's not about a loving feeling. Where's your dream surf? Snapper, Currumbin, Noosa points? Or some empty wave with no-one but you and/or maybe 2-3 mates (less people than the amount of waves coming through)?

What's your ideal surf? Your mate gets barrelled and pulls off a nice roundhouse while you bog rails all day and score closeouts? Or you get the barrels and maneuvers and who cares what happened to your mate?

A set comes through. You're out of position but some random stranger gets the first wave, best/biggest of the day. Another stranger picks off the next. You get the third and it fizzles in comparison to their waves. As you get closed out on or the wave fades, you see them way down the line still riding. Are you stoked for them?

What's the best time for surfing? A Saturday/Sunday morning, sun shining. You get to sit and sip tea with all the longboarders and kooks and cluelessly talk about the footy game the night before? Or a frigid midweek dawn patrol in winter, sand still below 0, no-one out, glassy barrels unloading on the sandbank?

I'm all for chat in the carpark or on the beach before/after a surf, but I'm aggressive and selfish in the water. It's a war zone out there. I want the best waves for myself, I don't care one iota about other people in the water. My session satisfaction is based on what I did and how well I did it. Even with just one mate, I still want to do better than them.

To be honest, if there are some of you with more than enough waves to go around and you get to high-five each other into the waves and you're just too tired to care, then I'm jealous. It's not like that here, even when it's uncrowded. I've had 5 hour sessions with less than 10 people in the water when I still don't get enough, as recently as last spring.

It's funny how the very same SUPGers philosophising about how friendly and loving their sport is seem to be very, very angry people.

You need some kids mate, to help you appreciate life a bit more....watch one of them catch a wave and you will be pretty stoked.

Ah there it is, self satisfaction, just about sums you up

I have seen clowns like you come and go over the years, the rest of us surf because we like it.
I like my SUP surfing and I like where I surf because, well I just like it.

Damn that is sure a negative attitude....only my opinion.
You are ,as is everyone else entitled to your own thought process but I have to wonder how much fun you can get from such a" selfish"(my opinion only)outlook on surfing. If it flows into general life, and why wouldn't it, I find it difficult to see how anyone can be termed a mate.
Hooting and yelling for a good ride from someone else is a buzz and only makes me want to get one as good.
Getting a hoot from someone as I ride is a great feeling, even better when it is someone I don't know, and better again when it comes from someone who surfs better than me.
